This year marks a monumental milestone for our community. We invite all SIG members, as well as the broader AERA community, to join us for a special session:
"Paulo Freire SIG Business Meeting: Celebrating 20 Years"
As a keynote speaker, we will have Professor Ana Cruz, who was part of the creation of the SIG, discussing with the current SIG Officers and members the historical context of the SIG's creation.
Come celebrate two decades of critical pedagogy, community building, and scholarly activism. This is a vital space for us to reflect on our history, discuss the future of the SIG, and connect with colleagues dedicated to education as the practice of freedom.
The panel will be followed by a reception with drinks and snacks.
We are honored to announce that Dr. Ana Cruz, Professor of Education at St. Louis Community College at Meramec, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Paulo Freire Legacy Award.
This prestigious award recognizes educators and advocates who embody the spirit of Paulo Freire’s "Pedagogy of the Oppressed," demonstrating an unwavering commitment to social justice, critical dialogue, and the empowerment of marginalized communities through transformative education.
The award will be formally presented at the Paulo Freire SIG Business Meeting during the 2026 AERA Annual Meeting. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ana Cruz!
