Dear International Studies SIG 54 Members,

I hope this summer’s newsletter finds you safe and healthy in these extraordinary times. As we all continue to make transitions to accommodate sometimes-daily changes to our lives, some plans remain the same regarding our work with AERA. We recognize, though, that if we can count on anything at present, it is that even the changes undergo change at a moment’s notice.

My thanks to Dr. Delois Maxwell for curating this newsletter. You will find great information to support you as we move from summer into fall.

Here are some specific updates:

  1. Annual Meeting 2021. AERA intends to convene a face-to-face Annual Meeting in April 2021 in Orlando, Florida. The theme is “Accepting Educational Responsibility.” Unless and/or until we hear otherwise from AERA leadership, we will proceed as originally planned for next spring.

  2. Annual Meeting Peer-Reviewers. AERA and I reached out to the membership to solicit peer-reviewers. We hope you signed up! Our Program Chair, Dr. Victoria Showunmi, will once again lead the process for SIG 54.

  3. AERA 2021 Annual Meeting Paper and Session Submissions. You have received information about the submission process. The deadline is July 22, 2020, 11:59 PM, PDT. More information is on the AERA website:

  4. AERA 2020 Paper Submissions. It’s not too late for you to submit a paper you had accepted for our canceled Annual Meeting. The deadline is June 22, 2020. Go to

  5. AERA Job Postings. AERA continues to keep an updated Jobs e-Newsletter that you each receive. If you are in the market, it is a good place to start. You can also go to the AERA website for the Online Jobs Board: -- If you know of colleagues looking, feel free to forward it to them.

  6. AERA Professional Advancement. I encourage you to register for the very-reasonably priced Virtual Learning Series that AERA is hosting.

  7. SIG 54 Virtual Professional Development or Conversations. Inexpensive or complimentary webinars, virtual ignite sessions, and fireside chats from many organizations have been my lifeline in the past few months. They are a great way to help you keep the focus on your teaching, scholarship, and service in these challenging times. If you have some ideas for sessions relevant to International Studies, let us know and we will see if this is something we can offer to our SIG.

  8. Your Institution’s Career Advancement & Promotion. If you are up for tenure or promotion in this coming year, you have an entire SIG of possible support, so reach out to us if you need ideas for peer-reviewers, letters of reference, etc.

Our International Studies SIG Executive Board includes your elected officers: Elizabeth Reilly, Chair; Victoria Showunmi, Program Chair; and Julia Mahfouz, Secretary/Treasurer. We continue to meet via Zoom each month. Our other SIG leadership include Delois Maxwell, Newsletter Editor; Frank Fonseca, Webmaster; and Yuqi Liao, SIG Photographer.

Do reach out to us if you have questions or suggestions about how to support each other moving forward. We are here.

Looking forward,

Elizabeth C. Reilly
