AERA Presidential Address
AERA President Vivian L. Gadsden to Address Annual Meeting on Saturday, April 29
AERA President Vivian L. Gadsden will give the 2017 Presidential Address, which will be centered on the meeting’s theme, “Knowledge to Action—Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity.” As AERA starts its second century, her address will examine critical dimensions of educational opportunity and rigor in research related to a diversity of issues, populations, and contexts served by educational inquiry. Gadsden will address the need for enduring change that eliminates barriers to opportunity, engagement, and success, by drawing upon the strengths of research, practice, and policy to fulfill the promise of equal educational opportunity.

Following the address, Gadsden will pass the torch to AERA President-Elect Deborah Loewenberg Ball, who will begin her term at the conclusion of the conference.

A champagne reception will follow the address.

Rep. Castro to Speak at Annual Meeting
Congressman Will Address Higher Education Access
Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX) will provide a perspective from Capitol Hill during his opening comments in a session titled “Improving Access to Higher Education Through College Advising.” Castro, who represents the San Antonio area and also serves on the board of the National College Advising Corps, will catalyze a discussion among commentators Laura Perna (University of Pennsylvania), Raymund Paredes (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board), and William Tierney (University of Southern California), and with meeting attendees.

Major Lecture Speakers Announced
Lawrence-Lightfoot, Rumbaut to Give Distinguished Lectures
AERA President Vivian L. Gadsden announced that Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot and Rubén Rumbaut will give the two major distinguished lectures at the 2017 Annual Meeting.

The AERA Distinguished Lecture will be given by Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot—Emily Hargroves Fisher Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Lawrence-Lightfood will deliver a lecture titled “’Let the Great Brown River Smile.’ Liberating Frames and Educational Discourses: On View, Voice, and Visibility.”

The Wallace Foundation Distinguished Lecture will be given by Rubén Rumbaut—Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Irvine. Rumbaut will give a talk titled “From Middle School to Middle Adulthood: Education and the Social Mobility of the Immigrant Second Generation in an Age of Inequality.”

Awards Ceremony Luncheon
Honoring Excellence in Education Research
The fifth annual AERA Awards Luncheon will be held Saturday, April 29. The luncheon is an opportunity to celebrate the field of education research and the accomplishments of AERA-wide awardees and those who receive special citations. Tickets are still available for the luncheon and can be purchased online at “My AERA” by all Annual Meeting attendees while seats remain. Free tickets are available to attendees who bring their own lunches. Go to “My AERA” to reserve.

Get Your Bearings at the Welcoming Orientation
New members and first-time meeting attendees are encouraged to attend an hour-long orientation the morning of Friday, April 28. Chaired by AERA President Vivian L. Gadsden, President-Elect Deborah Loewenberg Ball, and Executive Director Felice J. Levine, the session will offer an opportunity to learn more about AERA, the benefits of membership, and how to navigate the Annual Meeting.
