Division H: School Evaluation and Program Development had an excellent year in 2004-2005 which we will build upon for 2005-2006. The credit goes to myriads of faithful volunteers in leadership and support roles.

The Division H committees are now organized to accomplish its five goals: supporting professional growth, facilitating outreach, supporting communication, enhancing membership networking, and providing professional recognition.

A major undertaking in 2004-2005 was the development of by-laws and a handbook. The by-laws articulate the charge of key committees organized under these five goals. The handbook documents provides the charges and given ideas of the actual work of each committee.

For example, our annual conference ties to professional growth. One highlight was the establishment of four sections for submissions to the annual program for Division H:  assessment, accountability, program evaluation, and research in the schools.  The timing was perfect, facilitating the processing of a record number of proposals for the Montreal meeting.  The program in Montreal was stronger than ever, with an increase in sessions available for Division H.  Reviewers, presenters, chairs, and discussants all contributed to this success.  Division sessions were well attended and delivered overall.
The Vice Presidential Series highlighted sessions organized by the Graduate Student, Affirmative Action, Outstanding Publication, and International Relations Committees.  The graduate seminar hosted a record number of participants, who benefited from sage advice about research and evaluation in PreK-12 educational settings. The other sessions focused on studying achievement gaps around the globe and discussing high-stakes testing controversies.  Another session focused on quality reporting practices.

Our newsletter is a major benefit to our full membership. Enhanced to be better than ever, our newsletter was issued several times during the year.  Its appearance was very professional, complete with color, pictures of members, new features, and informative articles. (Newsletters are available at the Division web page.)

Division H representatives rated discussants and presenters to help determine the winners of our newly reinstated outstanding discussant and presenter awards.

The Division H exhibit booth showcased all entries in our awards competition, providing a broad audience with a chance to see evaluation and research products of our members in a variety of categories.

Our leadership meeting was attended by over 40 members, with a productive discussion of the work of the division. Our annual breakfast/business meeting was "new and improved."  One new feature was a pamphlet, provided to all participants, which included not only the meeting agenda, but also the work of each committee and important announcements.  For the first time we used a PowerPoint presentation showcasing members and important points in the program.  Winners of our annual publication awards were announced, and door prizes were awarded.  Thanks to sponsors, we were able to stretch our resources and provide an excellent breakfast and reception at minimal cost to our members.

The reception, held at McGill University, not only provided an excellent site, food, and fellowship, but a taste of campus culture, including a protest in the streets!

We will build on past accomplishments to make great progress in the coming year. Division H looks forward to another strong year as we prepare for the 2006 meeting in San Francisco.
