On January 12, 2021, the AERA NAEP Studies SIG sponsored a webinar discussion on the student socioeconomic status (SES) measures. In this webinar, researchers presented results from two studies that analyzed changes in achievement gaps between low and high SES students over time. The first study used Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data and focused on country-level results, and the second study used National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and focused on U.S. state-level results. Researchers also discussed SES-related items from the NAEP student questionnaire data and how student-level neighborhood SES resources may provide additional perspectives on the SES measures.
