Call for Papers: Special Issue in Behavioral Sciences: Approaches in Developing Leaders in Urban Schools

📢 Call for Papers | Special Issue in Behavioral Sciences

Approaches in Developing Leaders in Urban Schools

Submission Deadline: September 2026

Urban schools face distinctive and persistent challenges — resource inequity, rapid demographic change, and shifting policy landscapes — that demand a particular kind of leadership. Yet how that leadership is developed, sustained, and studied remains an open and urgent question.

This special issue, guest edited by Craig De Voto (University of Illinois at Chicago), invites empirical and conceptual submissions that examine how urban school leaders are prepared, supported, and developed across career stages.

We welcome manuscripts that address topics including:

  • Leadership preparation programs and their design
  • Formal and informal professional development
  • Mentorship, coaching, and induction in urban contexts
  • The role of universities, districts, and community organizations in building leadership capacity
  • Innovative and equity-centered approaches to leader development
  • Experiences of leaders from historically underrepresented backgrounds

Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches are all welcome.

📅 Deadline: September 2026 📬 Questions? Contact Dr. De Voto at cdevot2@uic.edu 🔗 Full submission details:https://tinyurl.com/3meac6kt

Invitation to the Education Deans for Justice and Equity (EDJE Annual) Meeting (flyer attached)

Dear AERA Division A colleagues,

On behalf of the EDJE Leadership and Planning Teams, I am pleased to invite you to the 2026 Education Deans for Justice and Equity (EDJE) Annual Meeting, which will be held August 6–8, 2026, at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

This year's gathering is especially significant as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of EDJE. Over the past decade, EDJE has grown into a national network of deans, associate deans, department chairs, faculty leaders, and partners committed to advancing justice and equity in colleges of education. What began as a small community of leaders seeking to support one another in this work has evolved into an influential collective dedicated to transforming educator preparation, educational leadership, research, policy, and practice.

As colleges of education navigate increasing challenges related to democracy, educational equity, public trust, and the evolving political landscape, EDJE continues to provide a vital community for leaders committed to advancing justice and equity. The 10th anniversary meeting offers an opportunity not only to reflect on the progress made over the last decade, but also to envision the future of equity-centered leadership in higher education and educator preparation.

A central focus of this year's meeting will be the continued use and evolution of the EDJE Framework—a collaborative tool designed to help colleges of education assess, reflect upon, and transform their policies, practices, and cultures in ways that advance justice and equity. The Framework encourages institutions to examine their work across interconnected areas including governance and finance, teaching and learning, faculty and staff development, partnerships, and public engagement while recognizing that inequities operate simultaneously at individual, institutional, and ideological levels.

Participants in this year's meeting will have opportunities to:

  • Celebrate ten years of EDJE's impact and leadership
  • Reflect on lessons learned from a decade of justice- and equity-focused leadership
  • Explore how the EDJE Framework can support institutional assessment and transformation
  • Share promising practices and challenges across institutions
  • Develop strategies for navigating contemporary political and organizational challenges
  • Strengthen networks of support, collaboration, and accountability among educational leaders

REGISTER HERE: LINK

Beyond the formal sessions, the annual meeting offers a unique opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the country who are committed to creating more just, inclusive, and democratic futures for schools, communities, and higher education.

We hope you will join us in Detroit as we celebrate a decade of collective leadership and recommit ourselves to the work of advancing justice and equity in education. Please help us spread the word by sharing the registration link with colleagues and partners who may be interested in joining this important conversation.

Warm regards,

Roland

Book Announcement: Facing the Challenges: How Principals can Survive and Thrive in Today’s Schools by John Fitzsimons

Facing the Challenges: How Principals can Survive and Thrive in Today’s Schools provides new and seasoned principals with practical tools and strategies to help navigate the often-murky waters of the principalship.

The goal of this book is to focus on recent school reforms and the daily challenges principals face. The author, John Fitzsimons, has 50 years of public educator experience, with roles ranging from classroom teacher to superintendent in three North American states.

The book is a practical guide for principals that describes daily events and how to navigate them. Fitzsimons makes a case that beyond simply surviving in today’s challenging environment, principals can thrive and be successful when public schools initiate broad-scale reform from within the school organization.

The content in the book challenges every principal to reflect deeply on the complex nature of the principal’s role and its relevance to the diverse communities principals serve.
