Welcome to the Immigration & Education Special Interest Group (SIG). This SIG was established in 2026 at a moment when questions of migration, displacement, belonging, and educational justice are among the most pressing issues facing schools and communities around the world. As scholars, educators, and advocates, we recognize that attacks on immigrant and displaced communities impact families, communities, and schools. When students and families experience fear, surveillance, exclusion, detention, or displacement, their ability to learn and their overall well-being are directly impacted. 

At our first Annual Business Meeting on April 10, 2026, SIG members unanimously adopted the Statement of Solidarity and Scholarly Commitment on the Violence Against Immigrant Communities and Its Impact on Education. The statement affirms our commitment to rigorous, community-centered, and internationally informed scholarship while calling on researchers, educators, and leaders to document harm, protect immigrant communities, and advocate for educational justice. We invite you to read the full statement and join us in advancing research, policy, and practice that uphold the right of all children and youth to learn, regardless of immigration status, nationality, or displacement history. 

As a newly established SIG, we are excited to build a scholarly home for researchers, practitioners, students, and community-engaged scholars whose work examines the intersections of immigration, displacement, and education. We look forward to fostering new collaborations, supporting emerging scholars, and creating a vibrant intellectual community committed to educational justice for im/migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, and other displaced peoples.
