Immigration is a defining issue of our time, and educational researchers are increasingly engaging with topics such as sanctuary schooling, undocumented student advocacy, immigrant integration, transnational student experiences, and the politics of nationality in public education.
We seek to create a scholarly home within AERA for researchers, educators, and practitioners dedicated to the study of immigration as it intersects with education systems, policy, and practice. We center educational experiences across immigration statuses, ethnicities, nationalities, and linguistic backgrounds, while also addressing the structural forces—such as racism, xenophobia, and exclusionary policies—that shape those experiences.
We support a vibrant community of interdisciplinary scholars who bring critical, intersectional, and community-engaged perspectives to research. We welcome those that study immigrant-origin students (including undocumented, refugee, and newcomer youth), the educators and leaders who serve them, and the policies and practices that impact their schooling experiences. We value asset-based and resistance-centered research that challenges deficit narratives and illuminates the contributions and agency of immigrant communities.
Key goals:
