The purpose of the Leadership for Social Justice SIG is to promote social justice teaching, research, service, and policymaking agendas, with the corollary aim of seeking to proactively improve educational leadership as a means of addressing equity concerns for underrepresented populations throughout P-20 education; also to share innovative, promising, and research-based programs, policies, and teaching strategies and proactively advocate on behalf of underrepresented populations in educational leadership.
Greetings LSJ Colleagues,
There are many woes of injustice in the world right now, and yet in times of collective sorrow, we find out who we are. We find out what matters and what is trivial. We discover new points of connection and strength.
Struggle can refine our work and purpose. Now, more than ever, Leading for Social Justice is an imperative. For this reason, we are asking our current members to each invite 5 colleagues to join our SIG. The cost is relatively small ($15), but each contribution represents our growing network (sign up here for LSJ SIG #165: https://www.aera.net/Membership). We can, and must, call upon one another.
As a SIG, we want to work together differently and find ways to nurture solutions.
As the late professor and poet, Nikki Giovanni reminds us: "All most of us want is somebody to love and somebody that we can love. We want a job that we can go to—sure, we’re underpaid, but at least we know it’s there. We want to feel that there is some dignity in our lives. I can’t believe that we are asking too much. We do want to feel there is something in us that is good and that is wonderful, and if we bring it out, no one will trample on it” (San Francisco State University, 1984).
This is an invitation to further organize and mobilize as a SIG. Please join our efforts and spread the word... forward to 5 current AERA members and encourage them to join us!
Onward,
LSJ Executive Committee
