Founded by Maika Watanabe (current Chair and Professor in the Department of Secondary Education at San Francisco State University), the Tracking and Detracking Special Interest Group brings together educators and researchers committed to interrogating the many ways students are tracked in our educational system. Broadly speaking, tracking is the placement of students into different educational contexts such that access to high quality curricula and resources is stratified. Tracking may refer to assignment of students into different classes (e.g., honors, college preparatory, or remedial, sometimes referred to as ability-grouping), programs (e.g., gifted or special education programs), or schools.

Given the inequalities facing students tracked into lower level courses, remedial programs, and/or under-resourced schools, as well as the positive effects heterogenous grouping can have on all students’ learning, the Tracking and Detracking SIG promotes the teaching of detracked programs in schools. Each year during the AERA Annual Conference, the SIG sponsors site visits schools with detracking programs. Despite being one of the largest gatherings of educational researchers in the country, school site visits during AERA are uncommon and the SIG’s sponsorship of such events are vital for affirming the interconnectedness of research and practice.

Our members include Jeannie Oakes (founder of UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education and Access), Karolyn Tyson (Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Sociology at UNC Chapel Hill), Kevin Welner (Professor of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder and Director of the National Education Policy Center), and many other researchers, educators, administrators, and graduate students committed to promoting access to high quality education for all students.

If you are interested in learning more about tracking/detracking, I strongly encourage you to join our SIG. Please also submit your annual meeting papers to the SIG or attend our presentations. At our business meeting, you’ll hear special presentations and enjoy refreshments with friends and colleagues. We look forward to welcoming you to this community.

If you are interested in hearing more about the SIG or would like to become involved in our work, please get in touch.
