Important Resource for Archiving Federal Data

We continue to monitor, act on, and track developments happening across the federal government relating to federal data accessibility, collection, and reporting. We know that many of you have questions and concerns regarding the availability of federal public use data files that education researchers rely on.

Our partners at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) have available an archive tool, DataLumos, for crowdsourcing government data. DataLumos accepts deposits of public data resources from the community and recommendations of public data resources that ICPSR itself might add to DataLumos.

We encourage AERA members to use this site as a resource. ICPSR also offers the option to submit data via Dropbox. If you choose to do so, you can access it through this link: https://myumi.ch/ICPSR-Upload-GovtData. If uploading, formatting in this structure will be most helpful:

  • Folder: Name of the study (e.g., National Survey of Family Growth)
    • Folder: Wave (NSFG 2019)
      • Files: any CSV, DAT, etc. (documentation and data files are both welcome)

We hope this resource will be valuable to education researchers and assist in ongoing efforts to ensure the broader accessibility of data from government agencies.
