Dr. Marta Estellés is Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Her research analyses educational policies, discourses, and curricula and their implications for democratic education. Her research draws from a variety of disciplines, including sociology of education, curriculum and policy studies, social studies education, social theory, history and philosophy. Over the past four years, she has been the principal investigator of a project funded by the Spencer Foundation that explores the increasing confluence of safety and citizenship discourses in educational debates. Dr. Estellés has also led Arts Beyond Borders, a project funded by the NZ National Commission for UNESCO to develop teaching resources aimed at engaging young people in global issues through the arts. 

During her career, Dr. Estellés has received several awards and appointments, including Best Conference Paper Award by the AERA Democratic Citizenship in Education SIG, Research Excellence Award by the Division of Education and best dissertation in Humanities by the University of Cantabria. She has previously been a visiting scholar at the University of British Columbia and Arizona State University. Dr. Estellés has published articles in Journal of Teacher Education, Globalisation, Societies and Education, Review of Education, Discourse and Compare. Her book The Safetyfication of Education: Neoliberalism, Psychopolitics and the End of Critical Education has recently been published by Bloomsbury Academic.
