We hope the fall quarter/semester is treating you all well! In preparation for the upcoming year, we wanted to share a few updates with you from our SIG. 

Leadership Transitions

• Welcome to incoming Program Chair, Marta Estelles! Marta is a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the US) in Social Sciences Education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Her research has analyzed a broad range of educational policies, discourses, and curricula aimed at shaping particular kinds of citizens (from global/national citizens through to identity-safe individuals and digital consumers) and their implications for critical democratic education. She is a previous AERA Democratic Citizenship in Education SIG Best Conference Paper Award winner (2024). 
• SIG Chair. This is my last year as SIG Chair, so please keep an eye out for the upcoming call for nominations and consider nominating yourself!

Research Connections and Mentor Meet Up

Based on feedback during the last business meeting, we are organizing a “Research Connections” page on our website. If you would like to be included as a way of making your work visible and discoverable by potential collaborators, please fill out this Research Connections Form.

Additionally, we are curating a list of journals that publish the interdisciplinary work relevant to our SIG members. Please take a moment to share any journals that you see as core to our work here using our Research Connections Form.

Finally, we hope to organize an informal mentorship meet up during AERA next spring. If you are interested in participating as a mentor or mentee (or both!) please indicate using our Research Connections Form.

Upcoming Awards

This year our SIG will be offering three awards:

• Best Paper Award – All accepted papers are eligible. Full papers must be submitted by January 15th. 
• SIG Travel Awards – We have limited funds available, but we anticipate offering 5 $100 awards to offset travel expenses for graduate student or early career members.
