AERA Division F – 2027 Annual Meeting Call for Proposals

Division F: Historical Inquiry in Education

Program Chair: Vincent Willis, The University of Alabama, vwillis@ua.edu

The Division F Program Committee invites submissions addressing all time periods, global regions, and topics related to historical inquiry in education. We continually aim to be inclusive in our approaches to address the systematic and evidentiary-based study of historical studies and research in education, broadly defined. We encourage submissions with particular attention to topics and populations that research has historically underserved and underrepresented, and to frameworks that incorporate from novel interpretive and methodological approaches.

In keeping with the 2027 AERA program theme, “Transcending Borders and Boundaries in Education Research: Toward a Beloved Global Community,” we welcome submissions that connect our past to this political moment, one that has positioned intellectual and academic freedom, diversity, and research inquiry in a precarious state. Additionally, we invite opportunities for transcendent exchange of ideas embedded in dialogue that affirms, as President Morris notes, “diversity, relationality, mutuality, and communal bondedness,” from global standpoints.

Submissions should be submitted into the most relevant section track (and to the section chair) for full consideration.

Section 1: Historical Research and Methods - Encompasses original scholarship focused on the theory and practice of historical research, mostly relying on research in primary sources. This section also includes discussions of historical methods and methodologies in education, inviting examinations of the possibilities and complexities of approaches including but not limited to archival inquiry and oral history. Section 1 Chair: ArCasia James-Gallaway, Texas A&M University, ajamesgallaway@tamu.edu

Section 2: Critical Historical Context - Centers contributions that use the work of historical scholarship to sharpen collective understanding of educational problems, policies, movements, events, and questions. Scholarship in this section often builds on existing scholarship to make broad arguments placing education issues in a critical historical context. Division F celebrates and actively welcomes scholars from a broad variety of disciplines who connect the history of education with contemporary issues. Section 2 Chair: Isaac Gottesman, Connecticut College, igottesma@conncoll.edu

Section 3: Public and Pedagogical Engagement - Elevates scholarship centered on the teaching and communication, and/or interpretation of historical research. This section explores creative expressions of educational history, inviting scholarship on topics such as teaching educational history, leveraging historical inquiry for social or educational change, and building community collaborations for public historical engagement. Section 3 Chair: Francena Turner, Fayetteville State University, fturner1@uncfsu.edu

All submissions should clearly identify the historical sources on which the study is based and discuss the paper’s larger significance within the historiography and/or scholarly literature of the topic and/or period.

Note: All paper and session submissions – including symposia – must be submitted without author identification to allow for anonymized review. In the case of session submissions, all participants must be deidentified. Submissions that are not deidentified will be removed from consideration.

Questions related to the Division F call for submissions and review process can be sent to the respective section chairs (listed above) and to the program chair: Vincent Willis, vwillis@ua.edu

We look forward to receiving your submission and to working with you as a presenter, discussant, or chair.
