The Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award

This award is given to an exemplary paper written by a current graduate student that makes central use of Marxist/Marxian theoretical frameworks and/or methodologies in its treatment of any topic in the field of education, broadly conceived.

The award will be presented at the Business Meeting at the AERA 2023 annual meeting. 

Rationale for Establishing the Award:

Marxian scholarship has been crucial in making sense of the structure of schooling, the relationship between schools and society, and the possibilities for educational transformation. It is very important to cultivate and support new scholars in this subfield, and to recognize their achievements. This award will provide institutional recognition for exemplary scholarship and for students who are engaged in this work while also encouraging the development of the field itself.

 Eligibility Criteria:

Nominees must be current graduate students enrolled in an institution of higher education. The papers that are put forward for consideration must start from Marxian frameworks and must address a topic or problem in the field of education.

Nomination Process and Timeline:

--Date of call for nomination: September 15, 2022

--Closing date for nominations: December 15, 2022

Students can be nominated by a faculty member or graduate student or can self-nominate. In addition to submitting the paper which they have chosen for consideration by the award committee, nominees must submit a recommendation letter from a faculty supervisor or mentor at the institution addressing the scholarly contribution made by the paper. Nomination materials should be sent electronically to the chair of the Award Committee.

Selection criteria:

The winning paper will be selected based on the following criteria: 1) Clear and central use of Marxian frameworks; 2) excellence in organization, analysis, argumentation, and writing; 3) strength of contribution to existing theory and literature. In addition, Award Committee members will refer to the faculty letter of support to aid in their reading and appraisal of the submission.

The Award Committee: 

The members of the Award Committee will consist of three SIG members in the field of education who have demonstrated expertise through their work in the use of Marxian theoretical frameworks and methodologies.
