Book Title: Leveraging Multistakeholder Partnerships in K-12 Educational Transformation
Districts frequently experience complex challenges that affect their ability to serve their students effectively. Past research studies exploring solutions to these challenges involving collaboration and partnership generally focus on the relationship between the district and one other party. Gray and Purdy (2020) emphasize the importance of multistakeholder partnerships to help address complex problems of practice. This edited volume in the Transforming Education Systems (SEL) will feature research studies examining how districts have leveraged multistakeholder partnerships to support district-level and school-level transformation.
The editors invite proposals involving research around how multistakeholder partnerships have contributed to successful transformation of schools, districts, and educational programming. We welcome research drawing on diverse methodologies, and we hope to bring together a variety of studies on multistakeholder educational partnerships. Studies involving universities, local government partners, and regional business and industry partners are particularly welcome. We are also interested in research that examines partnership strengths and challenges, how these partnerships promote innovation, and the ways these partnerships accelerate educational transformation. Conceptual proposals that put forward theoretical frameworks to analyze partnerships are also welcome.
Chapter proposal submission and book timeline are in the attached PDF (SEE ABOVE) . Please reach out with any questions.
Thanks so much,Karen

Title: Reimagining Systems Thinking in a Post-Pandemic World
Editors: M. Elizabeth Azukas, East Stroudsburg University, & Minkyoung Kim, University of West Florida
The COVID-19 pandemic caused the largest systemic disruption in history. While the pandemic was clearly a health issue, resulting in the deaths of over 6 million people, it was much more than a health issue. The pandemic was a complex phenomenon that impacted economic, political, and education systems. The pandemic had widespread economic impacts. Lockdowns forced many businesses to close, and the world is still dealing with the effects of the supply chain disruptions. The pandemic also impacted political systems with disputes over mask mandates, lockdowns, and vaccine distribution. COVID-19 caused the most extensive education system disruption in history, affecting 1.6 billion learners in more than 200 countries. The pandemic has highlighted the world’s complex interdependent structures, and it will require a multidisciplinary systems thinking approach for post-pandemic recovery and future pandemic prevention. Systems thinking is a “system of thinking about systems” (Arnold & Wade, 2015).
Ackoff (1971) defined a system as a set of interrelated elements that affect the functioning of the whole. Systems thinking has been defined in many different ways across various fields. Checkland (1981) referred to a systems approach as taking a broad view of a problem that considers everything and concentrates on the interactions between the different parts of the problem. Richmond (1994) defined systems thinking as the art and science of making reliable inferences about behavior through the development of the underlying structure. Senge (1990) viewed systems thinking as a discipline for seeing the big picture and interconnectedness. He emphasized dynamic patterns of change instead of static snapshots (Senge, 1990). Despite the variety of definitions, there are common characteristics associated with systems thinking including wholes rather than parts, interconnectedness and interrelationships, dynamic behavior, and feedback loops (Arnold & Welsh, 2015). As we attempt to understand and recover from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, systems thinking provides the complex, multidisciplinary approach needed to plan for the world’s future.
This book will examine the role of systems thinking in a post-pandemic world as practitioners, policy-makers, healthcare providers, business people, and educators tackle the complexity of recovery.
Topics may include (but are not limited to)
· Systems Thinking Redefined/Reinterpreted in a Post-Covid World
· Levels of systems thinking (granularity (global systems thinking down to local levels/communities)
· Common Pitfalls of Systems Thinking (and how the pandemic exposed these pitfalls)
· Structural Problems with Systems Thinking Interconnectivity of systems (supply chain)
· Continuance of Service During the Pandemic Interdependent systems
· Systems Post Pandemic

AERA 2023 Annual Meeting Call for Submissions
We are pleased to officially inform you that the AERA 2023 Annual Meeting Call for Submissions opened earlier this month on the AERA website. We encourage you to consider a paper or session submission to the ED Change SIG!. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM, Pacific Time, on July 27, 2022.
The 2023 Annual Meeting is dual component: place-based in Chicago, Illinois and on a virtual platform. When you advance a paper or session submission, you will also indicate whether you wish your paper or session, if accepted, to be presented in-person in Chicago or virtually. Both components of the meeting will offer participants rich opportunities to present their work and network with attendees.
The overall theme is "Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth." We hope that you will consider a submission in response to the Call. The theme advanced by AERA President H. Richard Milner, IV, and Co-Chairs Lori Delale, Mark Gooden, and Ebony McGee, invites AERA members and other Annual Meeting attendees to push the boundaries of ideas, methods, and collaborations to achieve innovations and novelty in studying and advancing quality consequential research.
We are looking forward to creating an Annual Meeting that will attract broad participation worldwide. This meeting will provide an opportunity to share research, assess the state of our knowledge, and explore how our work can become more relevant to diverse communities, publics, practitioners, and policy makers.
Please submit and join us in April 2023 in Chicago or virtually.
June 2022 Email Newsletter
Tomorrow is the last day of my children’s school year and perhaps like many of you, I am moved to reflect on both what a difficult year this has been and all the tremendous educators who show up every day to teach and bring love and joy to so many. As a reminder of these efforts and their meaningfulness, I recommend this crowd sourced poem from National Public Radio a week or so ago - a true piece of art that reminds us what is at stake and how educators make a difference. https://www.npr.org/2022/05/31/1102065218/crowdsourced-poem-teachers-kwame-alexander .
Additionally, the June issue of Lead the Change features Trinity College’s Dr. Elise Castillo, and a doctoral corner features one of our wonderful travel award winners, Kate Kennedy of USC.
Below, I have also included (if you can believe it!) the call for AERA 2023! We are so excited to see all your wonderful proposals and to celebrate your work! Proposals due: 7/27/22
Please submit and join us in April 2023 in Chicago or virtually.Jennie
I don’t know about you, but it seems one minute ago I was sitting in the last Ed Change Session at AERA and the next I was cheering on all the incredible graduates in our field. Now that the official school year has ended, robes worn and grades delivered, I wanted to just once again express my gratitude to:
Additionally, we have attached the Lead the Change from our emerging scholar award winner Dr. Lauren Bailes, and a doctoral corner from one of our doctoral student winners, Dr. Reut Liraz. Our other winner, Dr. Cynthia Wise’s, doctoral corner piece from 2021 is also attached.
Send news, jobs, publication calls - what have you - we are here to share all things ED Change!
Finally, please don’t hesitate to reach out with requests, ideas, or comments. We want the SIG to meet your needs and can do that more effectively if we know what they are. In the meantime, I hope each of you have some time ahead for respite and recharging.
Jennie

Dissertation Call
My name is Nicole Shanley, and I am a doctoral student at UNC Charlotte.
My study seeks to investigate and address the lack of a rubric to guide and support the integration of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies (CSP) and practices in online instruction. To be responsive to the cultural diversity in the US public school system and the growing demand for online educator preparation, there is a need for the integration of CSP in rubrics that support the design of online learning. Currently, our online evaluation rubrics do not incorporate any guidance for including CSP into online learning.
With this in mind, I am looking to conduct a Delphi study with college faculty throughout the United States who have expertise in Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies (CSP). Do you have any contacts or recommendations for professors that you think would be a good fit?
I have created a Google Form to help collect the contact information of potentially interested participants.
Mentoring Session on April 7th
Graduate students and early career scholars can receive feedback and support on their AERA presentations.
When: Thursday, April 7th at 4pm EST (on zoom)
How: We will create small groups (2-3) of participants who will be paired with a more advanced scholar based on interests and knowledge. Each participant will present their research (in whatever form it is currently in) and the rest of the group and scholar will provide feedback in 20-minute blocks. There will also be time for general Q&A and debriefing.
Why: Because we have all been there and want AERA to be the most positive learning and networking experience it can be.
If interested in participating, please fill out this short survey - by April 1

Podcast of Interest
From Jal -
Rod Allen (B.C. superintendent) and I have started a podcast, Free Range Humans, which is very ed change-y. We have on folks like Michael Fullan and Andy Hargreaves, as well as teachers, students, and others, to talk about making “schools fit for human consumption.” We are going to do something in December where we interview students from a number of the PISA leading nations about realities in their schools.
Cynthia Wise, Social Media Coordinator
It is hard to believe that the summer is almost over and a new school term is upon us. I know for many this time has brought a range of emotions and potentially fears regarding what lies ahead. I send wishes of strength and care to you and please reach out if there are ways the SIG can support you, your colleagues, and/or students over the months ahead. Now is the time to show solidarity and care for each other and to fight for policies that will help to keep us all, and especially the most vulnerable among us, safe.
Thanks to all who submitted proposals and/or agreed to be reviewers! We appreciate you! Thank you too to Osnat Fellus who has worked so hard to facilitate this process.
AERA reviews are due on September 3rd. We appreciate your thoughtful reviews and willingness to support your colleagues in their research.
We will send out awards information in September and opportunities to engage in mentoring and other workshop opportunities!

I will keep this month’s update brief (an AERA reminder, an appreciation, a new Lead the Change with Dr. Chad Lochmiller, and a new Doctoral corner with Cynthia Wise) and hope that you are finding more time for yourself and non-work related activities.
First, (and somewhat antithetical to my prior point), just a quick reminder that AERA proposals are due in 4 days on July 20th. We hope you will submit to the SIG and encourage others to do the same. The revised call is below.
The Educational Change SIG conceptualizes educational change broadly. The EdChange SIG is open to papers that use various frameworks from across disciplines (e.g., organizational behavior, organizational theory, institutional theory, adult learning and development, critical analysis etc.) and methods (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed). We are also open to papers that focus on theoretical discussions in the field of educational change. With that said, the SIG is particularly interested in research situated in practice and facilitates opportunities to elevate the work of educators, community members, and others and their role in improvement and change. Critical perspectives as well as work that centers diversity, equity, and inclusion in the US and internationally are also of great interest.
Appreciation
A big Ed Change Shout Out to Cynthia Wise who is serving as our social media coordinator extraordinaire! We appreciate you and are so thankful for all the work you are doing to keep our social media updated, informative, and inclusive. Follow us (@EdChangeSIG) and Cynthia (@cwisenews) on twitter
and facebook (https://www.facebook.com/AERAEducationalChangeSIG155)- you will be glad you did!
