SIG Description & Purpose

The AERA Politics of Education (PEA) SIG aims to foster and support the conduct, dissemination, discussion, and application of research on the political functions and outcomes of education at all levels.

The Politics of Education Association (PEA) was formed in 1969 as the Politics of Education Society. In 1978, it became the Politics of Education Association, as part of AERA. Interest in educational policy and politics expanded so that in 1987, the Association successfully called for the formation of a new division within the American Educational Research Association. Today, that division is known as Division L: Policy and Politics. The Politics of Education Association continues as a Special Interest Group affiliated with the American Educational Research Association.

Call for Submissions: AERA 2024 Annual Meeting
Print

The AERA 2024 Annual Meeting Call for Submissions is available on the AERA website. Members of the Politics of Education SIG are invited to consider a paper or session submission for the annual meeting. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM, Pacific Time, on July 31, 2023.

The 2024 Annual Meeting is dual component: place-based in Philadelphia, PA, and on a virtual platform. When you advance a paper or session submission, you will also indicate whether you wish your paper or session, if accepted, to be presented in-person in Philadelphia or virtually. Both components of the meeting will offer participants rich opportunities to present their work and network with attendees.

The overall theme is "Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action." We hope that you will consider a submission in response to the Call. The theme advanced by AERA President Tyrone C. Howard “asks researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to imagine boldly what education spaces free of racial injustice can look like.”

Please submit and join us in Philadelphia, April 11-14, or virtually, April 25-26.

The annual William L. Boyd National Educational Politics Workshop, sponsored by the Politics of Education Association (PEA) will be held in concert with the AERA meeting in Philadelphia, PA in April 2024.

Emerging scholars—currently enrolled graduate students and academics/educational researchers who earned their doctoral degrees after March 1, 2023— who have an interest in educational politics will have an opportunity to learn about current and promising research in the politics of education and interact with leading politics and policy of education scholars during the 3-hour in-person workshop.

Applications for emerging scholars to attend the Boyd Workshop will be available in early January. There is no fee to attend, but space is limited. Only applicants whose research interests are clearly tied to education politics will be accepted.

PEA members at advanced assistant professor or possessing an equivalent level of experience (3+ years) are strongly encouraged to consider serving as a mentor to the emerging scholars, sharing your expertise and experiences. Mentor sign-up will begin in early January via an electronic form. Prospective mentors are encouraged to sign-up by the end of February, so that the coordinators can begin the mentor/mentee matching process. Your participation is greatly appreciated!

Please contact Dr. Ivory Berry at ivory.berry@howard.edu if you have any questions about the Boyd Workshop.
