Former President of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and namesake of our premier SIG award, the late Karen Lewis, used three questions to guide her leadership decisions: does it unite us, does it build our power and does it make us stronger? As we enter into a time of great uncertainty around the work of educators, we must turn to our community spaces and task them with living up to Lewis' aims. The Teachers' Work/Teachers Union (TWTU) SIG will strive to be a space where we can cultivate member unity, build our collective power as workers and researchers, and make us stronger as we stand in solidarity with one another.
In the 2025 year the SIG will host a full schedule of presentations at the AERA annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. We will also release two special issues of Workplace: A Journal for Academic Labor centering on teacher work and teacher unions in contentious political times. When we gather and when we learn from one another in this next year, let us commit to doing so with Karen's questions guiding us.
In solidarity,
Dana Morrison & Brianne Kramer, Co-Chairs, Teachers' Work/Teachers Union SIG 127
