The lecture will be preceded by a traditional indigenous cultural protocol by members of the First Nations of Vancouver, who will welcome meeting attendees to their traditional territory. The ceremony is intended to convey the spirit and rich cultural heritage that have been so welcoming and supportive of AERA’s presence in Vancouver.
Smith is a world-renowned indigenous scholar. She is professor of education and Maori development, Pro-Vice Chancellor Maori and Dean of the School of Maori and Pacific Development, at the University of Waikato, in Waikato, New Zealand. She has worked in the field of Maori education and health as an educator and researcher and is known for her work in Kaupapa Maori research. Smith is from two tribes in New Zealand: Ngati Awa and Ngati Porou.
The ceremony and lecture will be followed by a reception in West Ballroom D.
