A Message from AERA Executive Director Tabbye Chavous – Ensuring a Safe and Welcoming Annual Meeting

March 25, 2026

Dear AERA Members and Friends,

We are excited to welcome scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and others from around the world to the 2026 AERA Annual Meeting, April 8–12, in Los Angeles. We deeply value your contributions to advancing education research and your engagement in our global scholarly community.

The safety and security of all participants is a top priority for AERA. We are working closely with the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office, the Los Angeles Convention and Tourism Board, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Convention Center security, and our conference hotels as part of our standard planning protocols to ensure the meeting is safe, welcoming, and productive for everyone. AERA’s leadership and staff, along with local partners and safety and legal consultants, are all actively engaged in these efforts.

To help you prepare for your visit, we encourage you to explore Los Angeles’s official AERA visitor page, which includes information on navigating the city, local attractions, safety tips, dining, and transportation. This resource is designed to help you make the most of your time in Los Angeles and enjoy all that the city and the conference area have to offer. You can also visit the AERA 2026 microsite for a list of local services and resources.

AERA strongly values the participation and contributions of our full community of members and affiliates—from across the U.S. and around the world.

We recognize that recent actions related to U.S. immigration enforcement and U.S. engagement in war in the Middle East may raise concerns among some participants about safety and travel. We take those concerns seriously.

We are working with our local planning partners to ensure that all meeting facilities follow local, state, and federal laws, and that attendees have access to clear information, updates, and support resources. We also encourage our international attendees to review official U.S. guidance for international visitors and to carry appropriate travel documentation, including a printed copy of your official Annual Meeting acceptance letter.

We appreciate your dedication to education research and its use in improving our society, and we look forward to seeing you in Los Angeles for #AERA2026. Please feel free to contact me at executive.director@aera.net if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Tabbye Chavous, PhD
