2023 DoY Award Winner

The 2023 Research on the Superintendency Special Interest Group Dissertation of the Year was titled, The Invisible Candidate: Examining Gender Bias within the Hiring Practices of the K-12 Superintendency.  The Dissertation of the Year Committee, among the strengths of this year’s dissertation, noted:

The study does in fact, “fills the research void in the areas of hiring practices, shed light on the reasoning behind gender bias, and identify potential solutions to address gender disproportionality within the superintendency”.

The implications for theory, policy, practice, and further research were appropriate and connected clearly to specific scholarship and literature.

The disproportionate representation of female superintendents is certainly an important topic to be explored.

Enjoyed reading.  Sadly, little has changed in this area over time having been a superintendent search consultant at an earlier time in my own career.

The Research on the Superintendency Awards Chair, Dr. William T.  “Toby” Holmes from the University of New Mexico, would like to thank the Dissertation of the Year Committee Members:

James Coviello, Assistant Professor, Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership, School of Education – St. John’s University,

Grace Liang, Associate Professor, Department of Educational Leadership – Kansas State University,

Meredith Mountford, Associate Professor, Department of Educational Leadership and Research Methodology – Florida Atlantic University, and

Jennifer Timmer, Assistant Professor, Department of Educational Leadership, Management, and Policy – Seton Hall University.

Nominated by Dr. Maritza Lozano….The 2023 Research on the Superintendency Special Interest Group Dissertation of the Year has been awarded to Dr. Sally Jarvis from California State University Fullerton.

Congratulations, Sally!
