Welcome to our page focused on AERA Special Interest Group (SIG) 93- Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education. The purpose of our SIG is to provide a professional forum for inquiry to all areas of school physical education, sport, physical activity culture, and health with a specific emphasis on research in school physical education settings. As such, our SIG 93 provides opportunities some of the most rigorous, impactful, and relevant research in the fields of physical education, sport pedagogy, and physical education teacher education. I would strongly encourage any person(s) doing research in this field to consider our SIG as an outlet to propose and disseminate work. We are committed to facilitating a professional platform for critical research engagement, advancement, and support within our field.
As a SIG, we provide multiple opportunities to present ranging from the national conference sessions, which can include oral, poster, roundtable, and symposium research sessions annually. Researchers are welcome to submit their research abstracts for the desired presentation mode each year during the regularly scheduled AERA conference abstract cycle. Next, we also offer a pre-conference session called The Invisible College (IC). The IC has been historically one of the most enjoyable, provocative, and connective events that our SIG holds each year. The IC typically consists of an all-day event that includes multiple informal, informational, and discussion-based sessions (can include panels, researchers, practitioners, etc.). Our academy comes together for this day to provide insight, feedback, and discussion unlike any other research-based conference event. The abstracts/applications for the IC are usually announced in the fall and are reviewed internally by the SIG leadership team. Those who want to discuss important topics are encouraged to apply, regardless of official conference presentation commitments or nots. Thirdly, our SIG offers a monthly webinar for members and non-members to learn about contemporary research topics in our field. These webinars are themed but may include a wide variety of presenters serving as different stakeholders in our field. There is always time provided for discussion and Q&A as well. While the SIG leadership team organizes and leads these efforts, we always appreciate hearing from interested presenters and attendees to share ideas or get involved!
In addition to the above initiatives, it is important to note that we also offer a mentorship network in which faculty and graduate students can seek and be connected to others for support for the various career stages and events one may need support for. This can include mentoring for jobs, promotion, project support, administrative duties, graduate mentorship, and the list goes on. Please consider reaching out if you’re in our field and would like some mentorship support from a wonderful network of researchers/faculty.
