Message from the SIG Chair
Sharon A. O’Connor-Petruso, Ed.D.
City University of New York, Brooklyn College

October 4, 2017

May I begin by expressing my heartfelt prayers for all those affected by the catastrophic weather conditions around the world. The unprecedented number of hurricanes, earthquakes, coastal flooding etc. which continues to impact so many individuals, most recently decimating Puerto Rico where 3.5 million Americans are suffering, reminds us that we are our brother’s keeper and will always be there to support their physical and emotional rebuilding.

On our most recent tragedy in Las Vegas, Nevada may I again express my sincerest sympathy  for the families of the 59 people massacred and the 500 people still suffering – my prayers like many others are with you.

Concerning our SIG, I would like to thank the members who attended our Business Meeting in San Antonio. Next year in New York, we have a special presentation by several authors from the Handbook on Comparative and International Studies in Education, Donald K. Sharpes Editor, and I urge everyone to attend.

We are also conducting a “Membership Drive” where individuals will receive an electronic “50-50 e-raffle ticket” from our Awards Committee Chair, Dr. Johanna Lasonen for every new member they bring in. For example, if we bring in $500 of new membership fees, $250 will be awarded at the drawing of the e-raffle ticket at our Business Meeting in New York. Please send the names of the new members to Johanna at lasonen@usf.edu by December 3, 2017.

I would also like to remind our graduate students to submit their proposals for the Graduate Travel Award, $500 Stipend, by December 10, 2017. Criteria and submission guidelines are located on our web site at http://www.aera.net/SIG054/Graduate-Travel-Award .

I am looking forward to seeing everyone in New York.

Warmest regards,

Sharon O’Connor-Petruso, Ed.D
