To advance public awareness and knowledge, inform policy and practice, and provide direction for future scholarship, AERA undertakes initiatives and publishes reports on major issues and trends in the field. Reports are designed to be shared with wide audiences and are focused on providing practical recommendations. These efforts often involve cross-disciplinary task forces made up of leading experts and, sometimes, close collaboration between AERA and other research organizations.

Open Access

AERA is committed to expanding the open dissemination of scholarly work. Making education research more accessible is critical to the betterment of the field, education practice and policy, and society. This portal demonstrates the ways in which AERA – through public education and advocacy efforts, the launch of AERA Open and other innovative open access publishing initiatives, and dissemination of federal policy updates – is helping to lead the transformation to a more open and equitable knowledge community.

Prevention of Bullying in Schools, Colleges, and Universities

Bullying presents one of the greatest health risks to children, youth, and young adults in U.S. society today. School safety, including the prevention is bullying, is a top national priority and a key area of academic research.

The AERA report, Prevention of Bullying in Schools, Colleges, and Universities: Research Report and Recommendations, presents practical short-term and long-term recommendations to address bullying of children and youth. Non-Tenure-Track Faculty in U.S. Universities

With a focus on the dramatic increase in non-tenure-track faculty in schools, colleges, and departments of education -- and on the working conditions they encounter -- AERA issued a statement and background report in November 2013 on advancing the professional circumstances for these faculty members.

The report, which stems from the work of an AERA task force, provides four recommendations for ensuring the future health of the non-tenure-track professoriate.

Rethinking Faculty Evaluation

In light of the dramatic changes in what faculty do and how colleges and universities are transforming in the 21st century, the AERA report, Rethinking Faculty Evaluation, offers research-based guidelines for rethinking how institutions of higher education evaluate research, scholarship, and teaching for tenure-line faculty.

The report makes three general recommendations in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and outreach. Released in November 2013, the report is a product of an AERA task force.

School Discipline

Through a set of formal and informal rules, patterns, and practices, school settings affect students’ attitudes, behaviors, life chances, and social emotional learning.

An initiative between AERA and the American Institutes for Research aims to map and integrate scientific work -- across education research, criminal justice, human development, sociology, and psychology -- for the purpose of providing direction and focus for future school discipline research.

An initial conference, "Schools, Rules, and Socialization Effects for Students," was held in September 2014. A special symposium will be held at the 2015 AERA Annual Meeting, and a report will be released in fall 2015.
