Division H

Message from Division VP

VP Announcements - March 2013

Here's the blast for March, 2013. Please attend to
#1a- #1h below. Also, hightlights of the Division H program are in #2
below.

1. Division H Activities:

1a. Annual Breakfast and Business Meeting. As usual, we are pleading,
cajoling, wheedling, and otherwise begging members (a) for contributions
for the breakfast door prize drawings, and (b) to volunteer to help setting
up and taking tickets at the door. We take anything from professional
materials to food to useful objects such as umbrellas and flashlights. We
would like commitments by the beginning of April.

Donations can be send to: Ildi Laczko-Kerr,
1825 E. Northern Ave, Ste.
#275
, Phoenix AZ 85020. For additional information or to volunteer, please
contact our Breakfast Chair, Ildi Laczko-Kerr, Ildi@azcharters.org.

1b. Early Career Mentoring Grants. Ipek Ozer, a doctoral candidate at
Kent
State University has completed her mentee experience at University of
Iowa/ACT/Pearson. An article describing her experiences is attached.

This year, again, we will award up to four Early Career Mentoring Awards.
These will cover up to $1000 of expenses for a finishing graduate student
or a first-job colleague to visit an established member of the profession
for on-the-job exposure and assistance. You can choose your mentor, or
we'll help you find one. Application forms will be available soon. For more
information contact
Toni Stroter, adstroter@liberty.edu.

1c. Graduate Student Research Roundtables. We are still seeking graduate
student applicants for the research roundtables that will happen as part of
our Graduate Student Orientation/Early Career Mentoring session, Saturday,
10-12 (site to be determined). The goal is to discuss and get feedback on
research-in-progress. Participating graduate students are eligible for a
$50 expense reinbursement from Division H. For more information, please
contact Marisa delCampo, marisa.a.delcampo@gmail.com.

Note: All graduate student members of Division H who are presenting a
paper in
San Francisco are also eligible for a $50 expense reinbursement.
We will have expense claim forms available at the Orientation session and
various receptions.

1d. Publication Awards. Dale Whittington, Publication Awards Chair, is
taking a survey of the membership to determine how well our current award
structure is serving the membership. Please take a minute to take the
survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OutstandingPubs.

1e. Exhibits Booth. You'll see major modernization to the exhibits booth
at the annual conference this year. Thanks to a generous contribution by
Glynn Ligon, all publication award submissions will be available for
electronic viewing on Cromebooks. We will also have a new banner and a
continuous loop projection of Division H activities. The Division H booth
is booth #117 in the Exhibits Hall in the Hilton,
San Francisco. The
exhibits hall is open Sunday through Tuesday.

We will need volunteers to person the booth. Chairs Dan Bugler
(dbugler@wested.org) and Jim Wohlleb (jimwohlleb@gmail.com) will be sending
out a doodle sign-up sheet soon.

1f. Division H Handbook. The Division H Handbook contains complete
descriptions of the responsibilities of and timelines for all elected
officers and committees in the Division. It has now been completely updated
and is available on the Division H website.

1g. Coffee Mentoring. Each year at the Annual Meeting, Division H sponsors
up to 20 "Coffee Mentoring" sessions in which we pair a graduate student
with a senior division member for a 20-60-minute "chat." We will pair
mentors and mentees and then pairs arrange a time and place to meet. Each
"chat" is supported by a $20 stipend to cover food and beverages.
Information on how to sign up to be a mentor or a mentee will be available
soon. For more information contact Marisa delCampo,
marisa.a.delcampo@gmail.com.

1h. Division H reaches out to local educators. Each year, AERA makes an
effort to involve local educators in its annual program. This especially
includes teachers and school administrators who might not otherwise know
about AERA or otherwise think of attending the Annual Meeting. Given its
history and focus, Division H has been at the forefront of this effort and
this year is no exception. We have reached out to ALAS (the Association of
Latino Administrators and Superintendents) as a collaborator and they have
helped us to identify 12 teachers and schools administrators from
throughout the Bay Area to join us under the
AERA Guest Pass program.
These local educators will spend a day at the Annual Meeting as guests of
Division H. The day will be bookended by an orientation breakfast where
they will be introduced to the program and make plans for how they will
each spend their day, and a reception late in the day to reflect and share
some thoughts about what they've seen and heard.

There will some innovative sessions (for example, a film festival) as well
as additional electronic bells and whistles (for example, Internet access
will be available in all the public parts of each conference hotel).

3b. AERJ Redesign. The AERA Council accepted the recommendation of the
Journal Publications Committee to transform the American Educational
Research Journal (AERJ) into an integrated journal that spans the scope of
the field. In arriving at an affirmative decision, Council considered the
reports of the AERJ Subcommittee and the Journal Publications Committee,
background documents on the journal, a member survey related to the
proposed change, and additional member input. Additional information is
available on the AERA website.

3c. Open-Access Journal. The AERA Council approved the establishment of an
pen-access journal pending additional detail from the Journal Publications
Committee.

3d. Bullying Briefs. AERA will soon publish a series of 13 2-page policy
briefs on bullying. The topics of the briefs range from definitions and
incidence of bullying to best thinking in the field on how to address
bullying in the schools. The briefs were prepared by an ad hoc committee
appointed by Bill Tierny, current AERA president.

VP Announcements - November 2012

1. AERA Annual Conference 2013 Submissions.
 The Division H Program
Committee has completed it's work selecting proposals for the 2013 annual
meeting and submitting proposed sessions to AERA. Proposal submitters will
be notified of acceptances and rejections this month. Thank you to everyone
who submitted a proposal. If you have questions, contact Toni Stroter,
Program Chair (a-stroter@uiowa.edu). As a reminder, the annual conference
will be April  27 (Saturday) to May 1 (Wednesday) in San Francisco.

2. Graduate Student Upcoming Activities

2a. Graduate Student (GS) Junior Representative Applications
. Each AERA
division, including Division H, appoints a representative to AERA's
Graduate Student Council (GSC). This person, called the Senior GS Rep,
attends GSC meetings and works on AERA-wide GS projects. This person also
coordinates GS activities for Division H: organizes sessions at the annual
conference (GS Orientation and Research Roundtables, Fireside Chat, GS
Poster Session),  sets up other activities at the annual meeting (GS
Reception, Coffee Mentoring), and is responsible for communication with
other graduate students throughout the year (Facebook, discussion groups,
outreach, etc.) and promoting Division H membership.

The Senior Rep is assisted by a Junior Rep, who becomes the Senior Rep the
following year. The GS Rep is thus a 2-year commitment (one as Junior Rep
and one as Senior Rep), but entails attending 3 annual AERA
conferences--the first just before becoming Junior Rep, the second as
Junior Rep, and the third as Senior Rep. Each Rep (Junior Rep-elect,
Junior Rep, and Senior Rep) receives $700 to support attendance at the
annual conference. Therefore, each Rep is supported for three successive
annual conferences.

Each year Division H selects a new Junior GS Rep-elect to fill the
position vacated when the current Junior Rep moves to the Senior Rep
position.  We will issue the call for applications for Junior GS Rep in
December. Applications will be due in February. Our current Senior Rep is
Marisa delCampo, University of Connecticut marisa.a.delcampo@gmail.com).
Our current Junior Rep is Ruhan Circi, University of Colorado, Boulder
(ruhan.circi@colorado.edu).

This is a wonderful opportunity for graduate students to network and
provide service to the division and to AERA as a whole. Please encourage
graduate students to apply.

2b. Research Roundtables. Each year Division H provides opportunities for
graduate students to present their work in progress and get feedback
through research roundtables conducted as part of the Graduate Student
Orientation Session the first day of the annual meeting. We will issue a
call for submissions in December. Please note that this call is separate
from the regular AERA proposal submission process and gives graduate
students an addtional opportunity to share their work at the annual
conference.

We will also need senior members of Dvision H to serve as proposal
reviewers and roundtable facilitators and discussants. Please contact me
(judy@bctonline.com) or our current GS Senior Rep (Marisa delCampo,
marisa.a.delcampo@gmail.com) if you are willing to help. Thanks.

2c. $50 Support for Graduate Students. At last year's annual conference,
Division H offered $50 support for any graduate student member of Division
H who presented a paper at any session for any division or SIG, including
our GS Research Roundtables and GS Poster Session. About 20 GS applied for
this support. We intend to continue doing this in 2013 in San Francisco. We
will remind everyone how this works as we get closer to the conference.

2d. Canpus Liaisons. Our Senior and Junior Reps will shortly begin a
renewed effort to establish liaisons at college and university campuses to
make sure GS at their instiutions know about the benefits of being a
Division H member. A number of GS volunteered at the breakfast meeting last
year. Marisa and Ruhan will be contacting you soon. They are also
looking for additional campus liaisons. Please let them know if you are
interested.

3. Publication Awards. Each year Division H gives out publication
awards--best dissertation, evaluation, research summary, training
materials, etc. The call will be issued in December. Winners are announced
at the Business Meeting/Breakfast at the annual conference.

4. Booth Modernization. Division H hosts a booth in the exhibits area at
the annual conference. This booth displays all submissions for the
Publication Awards. After the breakfast meeting, winners are prominently
displayed. We have typically had racks to display hard-copy submissions.
This year our booth committee--Jim Wohlleb (chair, jimwohlleb@gmail.com)
and Dan Bugler (dbugler@wested), with the assistance and  generous monetary
contribution of Glynn Ligon (past Division H VP) are planning to
modernize the booth--submissions viewed electronically (with, perhaps only
the winners in hard-copy), new banners, and a continuous-loop video.
Specifics are still being planned. If you would like to help, please
contact Jim or Dan.

5. Dissertation and Early Career Grants

5a. Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Dissertation Fellowship.  This program
awards four Fellowships of up to $25,000 to support advanced doctoral
candidates in a variety of fields, including education and the social
sciences. The application deadline is February 4, 2013. Additional

6. News From AERA

6a. Bullying Briefs. Our current AERA president, Bill Tierney has set up
three task forces--tenure (a reconsideration and analysis of what should
count toward tenure), non-tenured individuals (extent, conditions, and
recommended policies), and bullying. The bullying task force has completed
a series of briefs that summarize current research on a number of topics.
These are currently out  for review, but will be available soon. The Task
Force for non-tenured individuals has submitted a report to the President.

I'll provide more information about all these initiatives when it is
available.

6b. Standards for Student Assessment. The new Standards are currently out
for final review and approval by sponsoring agencies (including AERA and
APA). The development process has been intensive, including at least two
public review rounds. I'll provide information about the final version when
it is available.

6c.  AERA Centennial. AERA's centennial is 2015-2016. AERA has begun
planning. There will probably be a series of activities including print,
video, and events at the annual conference. Division H is very interested
in the centennial since the origins of AERA lie with research and
evaluation entities in the public schools. If you are interested in helping
Division H prepare materials and events for the centennial please let me
know.

6d. 2012 Brown Lecture. The annual Brown Lecture celebrates the Brown vs.
Board of Education decision in 1954 and illuminates the important role of
research in advancing the understanding of equality and equity in
education. Each year a distinguished scholar notable for producing
significant and sustained research related to equity and equality in
education is invited to give this public lecture in Washington DC. This
year's Brown Lecture was given by Dr. Vanessa Siddle Walker on October 25.
lt was also live-streamed to several other sites. The lecture will be
available soon on the AERA web site.

2. Renew Division H Memberships. Rolf Blank (rolfb@ccsso.org) and Colleen
G. Paeplow (cpaeplow@wcpss.net), Co-chairs of the Membership Committeesay:
Hello Division H members! We hope you have had a great summer and your
school year is starting off smoothly.  The Division H Membership committee
would like to remind you to renew your membership for the year (now would be a great time!)
AND also to forward information about AERA and Division H to people you work with,
colleagues in other locations, and graduate students.  We are working to
maintain and increase our strong membership numbers in Division H this year
and also to reach out to more education researchers that are doing work
with schools and school districts.  We also will appreciate your ideas for
membership outreach! Thanks very much!

3. 2013 Division H Social. The Div H Social Committee has secured a
waterfront restaurant in the shadow of the Bay Bridge for our Tuesday,
April 30 evening social at the annual conference next year in San
Francisco.  Check the Epic Roasthouse website http://www.epicroasthouse.com/
for a tantalizing overview of the site, the food and (of course) the views.
Special thanks to prospector Diana Wilmot, Coordinator of Research and
Evaluation at Palo Alto Unified.

4. 2013 Division H Booth. Jim Wohlleb (wohllebjamesc@aristotle.net;
jimwohlleb@gmail.com) , Booth Committee Chair, would like to begin early to
ask people to help with the booth next year in San Francisco. As you know,
we display submissions for our publication awards in the exhibits area at
the annual conference. We always need volunteers to set up and tear down
the booth, and to man the booth during the conference. Jim will be
circulating sign-up sheets after the first of the year.

Another thing to think about: Since all submissions are now electronic,
might our booth take on a new look by eliminating paper copies of
submissions? Please get in touch with Jim if you have ideas about this.

5. Division H Promo Video. As a reminder, Joe O'Rielly prepared a video
describing Division H. You can find it at http://www.edtv99.org/video/11155.

6. Amicus Brief. AERA has filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court case
of the Fisher vs. University of Texas-Austin which involves affirmative
action regarding admissions. The brief, and related documents, can be found
at http://www.aera.net/tabid/13333/Default.aspx. There are a number of
other professional organizations who signed on to the brief. This is an
important case and AERA would like everyone to get involved in
disseminating information via posts on Facebook and tweets on Twitter.

7. Job Announcement:  Director of the School of Education at Virginia
Tech. The position is advertised on the AERA jobs page
(http://careers.aera.net/c/job.cfm?site_id=557&job=10646001).

VP Announcements - August 2012
1. Proposal Review Schedule. Thank you for your submissions! The
submission system for the 2013 annual meeting in San Francisco (Saturday,
April 27 - Wednesday, May 1) is now closed. Each proposal will be reviewed
by three people during August and sessions will be created in September
and October. Official notification of acceptances and rejections occurs
November 1.

2. AERA Interim Deputy Executive Director. As you already probably know,
Phoebe Stevenson, who has been Felice Levine's Deputy Executive Director
for many years, has left AERA for a position at George Washington
University. The interim Deputy Excutive Director is Arnita Jones while
AERA seeks a person to fill the position.

3. Paper Repository. Papers from the 2010 and 2011 annual meetings are
available online on the AERA website. Click on "Publications" at the top
of the AERA main page and then on "Online Paper Repository." You must be a
member of AERA to access papers.

4. Division H VP Initiatives. In addition to our regular committee
activities, we are engaged in several additional activities. Please let me
know if you have input on any of the following or would like to suggest
other initiatives that would benefit Div H members.

4a. AERA Centennial. 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of AERA. Div H is
very interested in planning activities surrounding this event since AERA
was founded by directors of research and assessment in schools. Past VPs
Mary Yakimowski, mary.yakimowski@uconn.edu, and Joe O'Reilly,
joreilly@mpsaz.org, will be coordinating our suggestions.

4b. Program Analysis. At the AERA Council meeting in June, there was a
general consensus that it would be useful for divisions and SIGs to
analyze submissions for topics and submitters to make sure we're covering
important topics and ensuring that all relevant voices are being heard.
The Program Committee will undertake this analysis as part of it's regular
session development.

4c. Affirmative Action Committee Name Change. Winona Vesey, chair of the
AA Committee, has suggested Div H consider changing the name of this
committee. At least one other division, Division L, changed the name to
Diversity and Equity to be more descriptive of current activities and to
have broader appeal. Winona is researching the implications of a name
change.

4d. Website. AERA redid it's website; it went online last March. Div H is
in the process of revising old website content and adding content to fit
the templates for divisions.

4e. Local Educator's Program. AERA has a program to provide a one-day
complimentary registration to the annual meeting for practitioners. (This
program, incidentally, was proposed by Joe O'Reilly, a past VP for Div H.)
Paul LeMahieu is coordinating this effort for Div H for next year. If you

4f. Graduate Students. In addition to the two monetary dissertation
awards, coffee mentoring, and early career mentoring grants, at the annual
meeting in Vancouver this year we awarded $50 to all graduate student
members of Div H who presented a paper in any division or SIG. We intend
to continue this next year in San Francisco.

4g. International Members. Our International Committee, chaired by Whitney
Bortz, whitneyelaine8@gmail.com, and Brucu Kaniskan,
burcukaniskan@gmail.com, are readhing out to international members in
several ways. The committee has coordinated excellent invited sessions in
the past (and have another great one planned for San Francisco), and last
year we sponsored an international reception. We intend to do the same
next year.

5. 2012-2013 Initiatives From AERA President, Bill Tierney. Bill invites
input on all of the following.

5a. Human Rights and Academic Life. AERA has for many years been involved
in several human rights activities--American Association for the
Advancement of Science (AAAS), Human Rights Coalition, and most recently,
the Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) program. SAR is an international
network of universities and colleges committed to promoting academic
freedom and defending the human rights of scholars worldwide. AERA will
cross-post SAR's action alerts, and Bill encourages you to get involved by
offering to bring a scholar to your campus, write letters when there is an
action alert, and consider volunteering on the various task forces.

5b. Evaluating Education Research, Scholarship, and Teaching.
Postsecondary institutions are going through significant changes
pertaining to tenure, promotion, scholarship, and teaching. Jim
Fairweather, Michigan State University, is chairing a task force on this
issue.

5c. Working Conditions for Contingent Faculty. The fastest growing group
in postsecondary education is non-tenure-track adjunct faculty. Little is
known about the sorts of support these individuals are receiving or need
to receive to be effective teachers, researchers, and scholars. Professor
Adrianna Kezar, University of Southern California, is chairing a task
force to investigate this topic.

6. AERA Grants Program. The AERA Grants Program is accepting proposals for
its two research initiatives, with a deadline of September 19, 2012. These
programs provide small grants and training for researchers who conduct
studies of education policy and practice using quantitative methods,
including the analysis of data from the large-scale data sets sponsored by
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the National Science
Foundation (NSF). For more information visit the AERA website at
www.aera.net/grantsprogram. You may also contact George Wimberly at
grantsprogram@aera.net or (202) 238-3200

5. Other AERA News.

5a. Amicus Brief. AERA is preparing an Amicus brief for the Fisher v.
University of Texas-Austin court case which will rule on using affirmative
action criteria for college admission. Basically AERA will argue that the
substantial amount of social good that comes out of affirmative action
admissions dramatically outweighs any potential harm that could accrue to
individual underprepared admittees.

5b. Presidential Task Forces. Our current AERA President, Bill Tierney,
has established 3 task forces this year: (a) guidance on criteria for
tenure in a changing world, (b) standards for part-time, adjunct, and
contingent faculty, and (c) bullying. The bullying task force will produce
a series of 11 briefs on various topics.

5c.  AERA Centennial. AERA will be 100 years old in 2016. AERA is planning
a series of activities, celebrations, and media events. Since school
district directors of research bureaus were the founders of AERA, Division
H will take a very active role in planning.

5d. AERA Awards. There are several AERA-wide awards given to researchers
from life-time achievement to early career. Nominations are being accepted
through November. Self nominations are acceptable. More information is
available on the AERA website: aera.net

VP Announcements - June 2012
Hello, Division H'rs. This is the June, 2012 blast. Submissions for the
2013 program are due--see #1 below.

1. 2013 Annual Meeting Submissions. The theme for next year's annual
meeting is "Education and Poverty: Theory, Research, Policy and Praxis."
The system will be open for submissions June 1 – July 22nd, 2012. The call
for submissions is at:
http://www.aera.net/Portals/38/docs/Publications/AERA%20Highlights/AERA2013AMCallForSubmissions.pdf

Please submit proposals. We are assigned sessions depending on the number of submissions we receive.

2. Div H Social 2013.  While a crack committee is looking for a grand spot
to hold the 2013 Div H Social in San Francisco, we welcome your
suggestions if you have a feel for bistros and back rooms near the
conference hotels. Perhaps your sister the piano player knows a place?
(Contact Peter
Hendrickson at p.hendrickson43@gmail.com)

3. Division H website. Below is the new link to the Division H website. We
are working hard to make sure that everything transferred correctly when
AERA switched platforms in March. Please let our webmaster, Brad Coverdale
<bjcoverdale@gmail.com>, know if you are having problems accessing the
site or finding information.
http://www.aera.net/AboutAERA/MemberConstituents/Divisions/ResearchEvaluationAssessmentinSchoolsH/tabid/11136/Default.aspx

4. World Educational Research Association Meeting. The deadline for WERA
Submissions is June 30 for the upcoming Meeting in Sydney, Australia,
December 2-6, 2012. The call for submissions is at: http://www.weraonline.org/PDFs/2012Submissions.pdf

VP Announcements - May 2012
Hello Division H'ers. Welcome back from the annual conference in
Vancouver. I hope you all had an enjoyable and productive meeting. Here's
the blast for May. Please especially attend to #1 as the deadline is
rapidly approaching for volunteering to be a reviewer.

1. Annual Conference Proposal Reviewers. AERA has decided to keep the
volunteer system open for a few more days. The system will be closed
9:00am eastern time on Monday, April 30th. We need all the reviewers we
can get! Please follow the instructions below to sign up. Thanks to
everyone who has already enrolled.

To sign up as a volunteer to review submissions, members must go to the
home page of AERA - www.aera.net.  Then click on 'My AERA' at the top of
the screen.  Scroll down to 'AERA Annual Meeting' and then click on the
link for the 2013 AERA Annual Meeting Online Portal. Underneath the
Volunteer Menu, click on the link 'Volunteer to be a Reviewer'.

 2. Division H Video. At the request of last year's AERA president, Arnetha
Ball, each division was asked to assemble a video on how the conference
theme--No Know is Not Enough--is being expressed by that division. Joe
O'Reilly spearheaded the effort for Division H. It turns out to be a good
infomercial for the division. We owe Joe our heartfelt thanks. Here's the
link: http://www.edtv99.org/video/11155

3. Early Career Mentorships.  Division H supports mentoring opportunities
for graduate students just completing their programs. We offer up to four
$1000 awards for graduate students to visit an organization whose work is
of interest to them. (A fifth one is available from Paul LeMahieu.) We can
help graduate students find a mentoring organization if they don't already
have one in mind. Applications are are the Division H website. For
additional information contact Toni Stroter, <adstroter@liberty.edu>.
Applications will be reviewed periodically throughout the year. (If you
are interested in being a mentor, either contact Toni or fill out the
mentor form on the website.)

 4. DRE survey. The Directors of Research and Evaluation (DRE) is closely
aligned with Division H. DRE is conducting a survey to gather information
that will help them provide support to those in school districts charged
with collecting data, analyzing it and helping staff use it, whether in a
dedicated office or as ‘other duties as assigned.’

The capacity to do these activities varies greatly across districts. DRE
is asking you and other colleagues in districts around the country to tell
them about the research capacity in their districts. They will use the
findings of this survey to develop resources to support you and others in
jobs like yours.  Such support will include grant funding, working with
the U.S. Department of Education, and helping each other. We will also
send you a copy of the results so you can compare your district to others
that are similar.

Please take ten to fifteen minutes to complete the School District
Research Resources Survey at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K12_Research_Resources_Survey

If you have any questions please contact Joe O'Reilly: joreilly@mpsaz.org
or (480) 472-0241.

The survey is solely the responsibility of the Directors of Research &
Evaluation. The survey distribution is supported by our friends at
CTB/McGraw-Hill, AERA Division H, the National Association of Test
Directors and the Council of the Great City Schools. If you receive more
than one request to complete the survey it is because you are associated
with more than one of these groups. Please accept our apology for any
duplicate messages, but we wanted to make sure all districts had the
opportunity to participate.

 5. Job Posting. The University of Delaware currently is seeking to fill an
Assistant or Associate Professor, Tenure Track in Program Evaluation.
Consult this link: http://www.udel.edu/001263

6. Division H Volunteer Opportunities. Thank you to everyone who has
volunteered to work on a Division H committee. If I haven't already
contacted you, I, or a committee chair, will contact you soon. Working on
a committee is a great way to network. A list of committees can be found
on the division H website. I'm also attaching a volunteer form to this
blast. The more, the merrier, so please let me know how you'd like to be
involved.
