The SER SIG put forth bylaw revisions that were open to comments from the membership in October 2018. The Executive Council of AERA will meet at the end of June to vote on our revisions and will put forth a vote to our membership shortly thereafter. In the meantime, we wanted to share the current relevant portions of the bylaws and the proposed amendments. The SIG executive committee took into consideration member comments when crafting the amendments. We look forward to more discussion on this at the business meeting in April. The name change for the SIG was approved in July, and the Executive Council will vote on the proposed bylaws changes in September

Former SIG name: Special and Inclusive Education Research Special Interest Group

Current SIG name: Special and Inclusive Education Research Special interest Group

Current SIG purpose (Article IV. PURPOSES OF THE SIG: Special Education Research):

The purposes of the SIG are: To promote and explore areas of educational research of interest to special and general educators, including individual differences, teaching strategies and issues related to learning and well-being. In particular, to promote the study of issues and practices related to the education of persons with disabilities.

Proposed revisions:

The purpose of the Special Education Research (SER) [we will insert whichever final name is voted on here] SIG is to promote the study and dissemination of topics, research-based practices, and research methodologies related to implementation, access, equity, progress, and outcomes in the education of persons with disabilities and their families, advancing equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency throughout the lifespan.

SIG Activities: The SER-SIG sponsors sessions, holds a business meeting, and hosts a light reception every year at AERA's annual meeting. In addition, each year the SER-SIG presents the Distinguished Research Award and Student Research Award to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of special education research as well as travel grants to graduate students.
