Bilingual Education Research SIG 12

BER advocacy for the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA)

During AERA we learned directly from José Viana, the current occupant of the office of Director of the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), that the Department of Education was being reorganized. He explained to us that the proposed reorganization consisted on merging OELA under the larger office for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and eliminating the position of Director of OELA. This can potentially have catastrophic consequences for our multilingual learners.

There was a congressional hearing that included the OELA issue on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 and we are still to hear about its outcome. The leadership team as well as members from the SIG took action by sending letters and contacting members of congress to advocate for the protection of OELA and its director.

Draft Position Statement on Emergent Bilinguals

We invite members of the SIG to comment upon our recent efforts to articulate a statement, for potential future consideration of AERA as a position statement, regarding the education of emergent bilingual students. Check back soon for a link to the statement.
