AERA is pleased to offer all Meeting attendees a wonderful selection of tours. Make the most of your visit to Chicago and take one of the tours!

How to Register:
Space is limited for these tours, and interested attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Registered participants wishing to add courses, off-site visits, or tours can log in to add events to your registration.

There are 6 different tour times to choose from and 4 different tour options with 2 of the tour options offered twice.


Chicago Grand City Tour

Transportation:
Tours will depart from the Sheraton Chicago at the start time of the tour and return to the Sheraton Chicago at the end time of the tour.

Description:
On the Grand City Tour we will explore the Loop, the Theater District, extraordinary urban plazas, dramatic and diverse architecture, the Chicago River and the Magnificent Mile shopping zone. 

We will see Lincoln Park with its free Zoo, Grant Park with Buckingham Fountain and Millennium Park with its fabulous outdoor music pavilion and interactive fountains and sculptures.

Finally we will explore the Museum Campus which provides the backdrop of the best skyline photos of downtown Chicago.

Note: This tour consists of light walking, comfortable attire recommended.

Description:
Sit back and listen to your guide, Porkchop, who’s currently out on bail, bring you back to the 1920s when Chicago became America's brash symbol of lawless bootleggers, political corruption, moral indignation, and bloody violence.  Hear stories about the Gangster Era and some of the major players like Capone who have become legends. 

During the tour, we’ll celebrate the repeal of prohibition and visit a local Chicago distillery for a tour of their facility and sampling.

Tours will depart from the Sheraton Chicago at the start time of the tour and return to the Sheraton Chicago at the end time of the tour. 

Description:
This tour takes you on a complete journey of Chicago’s history, starting at the very beginning.  Creating an entertaining and interactive experience, each aspect of this tour is highlighted by historical footage, photos and music. 

Beginning in Chicago’s first affluent neighborhood, you’ll explore the Prairie Avenue District and behold Chicago’s oldest structure, the Clark House.  You’ll then discover how the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 prompted the rebuilding and complete rebirth of the devastated city. 

Next, you will swing through the 1920’s when Chicago became a brash symbol of bootleggers, organized crime, and speakeasies.  Then, dance your way into the Jazz and Blues Era before concluding at one of Chicago’s modern marvels, the magnificent Millennium Park.

Tour 6: Chicago Neighborhoods and Cultural Diversity Tour [SOLD OUT]
Day:  Saturday, April 18
Time: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Tours will depart from the Sheraton Chicago at the start time of the tour and return to the Sheraton Chicago at the end time of the tour. 

Description:
Traverse the ethnic neighborhoods of Bronzeville, Bridgeport, Chinatown, Pilsen, UIC/Little Italy and Greektown to grasp the rich social culture of Chicago beyond downtown.  

Highlights of the tour include Mexican Mural Art, former 1920s jazz club, historic factories that played a role in neighborhood development, Chicago park design and the “sunken” houses the Chicago is known for.

Overall, this Chicago neighborhoods tour is like a “People’s History” of Chicago, as much of the city’s history goes beyond the power centered in downtown.
