Lori Patton Davis to Challenge Narratives Surrounding Brown v. Board of Education in 18th Annual Brown Lecture—Register Now
In her Brown Lecture talk on October 21, Lori Patton Davis, professor of higher education and student affairs at Ohio State University, will challenge prevailing narratives surrounding Brown and introduce perspectives that might help account for our lack of progress—perspectives that typically are overlooked or erased in wider Brown discourses. Mark R. Wilson, a longstanding AERA Fellow and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, will give the 2021 AERA E. F. Lindquist Lecture on November 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET. Read more

AERA Releases Summary Report of External Review of 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting
Following the AERA 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting, AERA leadership engaged the Center for Applied Research to conduct an independent performance assessment to evaluate what contributed to the virtual meeting’s underperformance and to determine what could be improved for future meetings. Read more

AERA Awards 10 New Education Research Service Projects Grants
AERA has announced the recipients of 10 new Education Research Service Projects awards. Since its inception in 2012, the AERA ERSP initiative has sought to support pro bono service and promote the value of such work widely in the education research profession. Read more

House Build Back Better Act Includes Funding for R&D Infrastructure
Throughout September, the House has been working to advance the Build Back Better Act, a $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package that includes many of President Biden’s priorities advanced in the proposals for the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan earlier this year. Read more

White House Issues R&D Priorities for FY 2023
On August 27, the White House Office of Management and Budget and Office of Science and Technology Policy released a memorandum to federal agencies to provide guidance on multi-agency research and development priorities for the FY 2023 Budget. Read more

Appointments Made to President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology
On September 22, President Biden announced 26 appointments to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Read more

Researchers Honored by Yidan and McGraw Prizes
Several prominent education researchers received the highest of honors this month with two prestigious awards: the Yidan Prize and the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education. Read more

In Memoriam

AERA members who have recently passed away

Roger Weissberg, 69, died on September 5. He was a distinguished professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago. Weissberg was an AERA Fellow, founder of the AERA Social and Emotional Learning Special Interest Group, and a member of AERA Division H—Research, Evaluation, and Assessment in Schools. Read more
