SIG Achievements in 2020-21

Minutes from every meeting are saved in a shared folder accessible to the leadership team. This repository using Google Drive is helpful in generating the annual summary of activities and will serve as a resource when there is a transition in SIG leadership.

The SIG’s online presence has improved in the last year. The SIG page on the AERA website has been regularly updated based on suggestions shared during the monthly leadership team meetings including advertising upcoming events hosted by the SIG and others. The Webmaster established a YouTube channel and maintains the SIG’s Gmail account-AERANAEPStudiesSIG@gmail.com.

The SIG collected nominations for individuals willing to run for SIG officer roles in the Winter 2021 election. The SIG was able to put forth a ballot including two candidates for each of the following positions: Chair-Elect, Program Co-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. The SIG leadership team established the goal of creating a NAEP Studies SIG award. The group formed an Awards Committee comprised of Andrew Hudacs, Ning Rui, and Renee Savoie. The committee used the AERA provided “Petition for Award” template to create a set of guidelines specifying the selection procedures, scope, and criteria for the award. These guidelines were reviewed by the SIG leadership team and input was provided. The petition was submitted prior to the AERA 2021 Annual Meeting. It is anticipated that the AERA Executive Board will review the SIG’s petition at its June meeting. If approved, the NAEP Studies SIG will issue a call for nominations for the newly established Outstanding Publication Award in August 2021 and the winner will be notified by February 2022. The recipient and winning publication will be showcased during the AERA 2022 NAEP Studies SIG Business Meeting.

The Treasurer and Program Co-Chair worked over many months to organize a panel presentation sponsored by the NAEP Studies SIG—What Can Large-Scale Data Tell Us? A Discussion on Student SES Measures Using the TIMSS and NAEP Data. The well-attended webinar was conducted through support from Westat on January 12, 2021 and is archived on the SIG’s YouTube channel.

ABSTRACT: In this webinar, researchers presented results from two studies that analyzed changes in achievement gaps between low and high SES students over time. The first study used Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data and focused on country-level results, and the second study used National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and focused on U.S. state-level results. Researchers also discussed SES-related items from the NAEP student questionnaire data and how student-level neighborhood SES resources may provide additional perspectives on the SES measures.
