AERA Offers Roster of Professional Development Courses at Annual Meeting

The AERA Professional Development and Training Program will be offering a robust program of courses for the 2017 AERA Annual Meeting in San Antonio. More than 25 courses will be offered that provide training in statistical techniques and analysis, emphasize specific research methods and skills, cover significant research issues in related disciplines, focus on research for the improvement of practice, and examine recent methodological and substantive developments in education research and policy. These courses address quantitative and qualitative research methodology, capacity building, writing, and use of large-scale data sets.

Courses are designed at various levels (e.g., basic, intermediate, advanced) to reach graduate students, early career scholars, and other researchers who seek to increase their knowledge and enhance research skills. Instructors propose courses through the AERA Open Call for Proposals. The AERA Professional Development and Training Committee advises the Annual Meeting Program course selection based on the salience of the topics to education research and training, and overall course quality of the proposals.

The full roster of courses addresses statistical techniques such as HLM, meta-analysis, and propensity score matching. Some courses emphasize large-scale data sets such as NAEP, TIMMS, and PISA, as well as the Stanford Education Data Archive. Many courses focus on the coding of qualitative data and other qualitative research methods and practices. Others are designed to enhance skills and knowledge among advanced graduate students and early career scholars and address topics such as academic writing and publishing and sharing research with multiple audiences. 

The extended courses begin the morning of Thursday, April 27, the first day of the Annual Meeting. The mini-courses will occur Friday through Sunday, April 28–30.
