NAEP Studies SIG Annual Meeting Summary: 2023-2024

Five full leadership team meetings were held during the 2023-2024 year. Small group meetings were held as necessary to discuss outstanding paper awards and plan for webinars.

The leadership team was comprised of the following individuals:

The SIG leadership meetings were scheduled with the following core set of recurring topics while other relevant topics were added as appropriate.

  • Officer Reports
    • Program Co-Chairs provided updates on the progress of the session/paper review process and established the AERA 2024 program for the NAEP Studies SIG, including the business meeting.
    • Secretary/Treasurer provided updates on SIG membership and finances.
    • Web and Social Media Manager updated the SIG website and social media.
    • The Newsletter Editor provided updates about the progress of the SIG newsletter.
  • Plan for the 2024 annual meeting.
  • Selection process for the Outstanding Paper Award.
  • Strategize membership growth & recruitment.
  • Discussion of potential topics for the webinars.
  • Updates from the officers.
  • Discussion of the SIG ballot.

SIG Achievements in 2023 - 2024

The Outstanding Paper Award:  The NAEP Studies SIG issued its second Outstanding Paper Award in 2023-2024.  The leadership team formed a committee to review five nominations and selected a winner announced at the annual AERA NAEP Studies SIG Business Meeting held in Philadelphia, PA.  The winning paper was titled “Early Reading Skill Development and Characteristics of Reading Skill Profiles: Analysis of Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011) and NAEP 2015 Grade 4 Reading Overlap Sample Data” by B. Jasmine Park, Mengyi Li, Xiaying Zheng, and Yuan Zhang.  Dr. Park accepted the award on behalf of her colleagues and presented a summary of their work during the business meeting.

NAEP Studies SIG Sessions at AERA 2024: The work of the Program Co-Chairs resulted in a final AERA 2024 program that included a symposium, a roundtable session, and a business meeting.

NAEP Studies SIG Webinar:  The members of the SIG leadership team led the effort to organize one SIG-sponsored webinar (co-sponsored with the AERA Social Studies Research SIG).  The webinar was recorded and posted on the SIG’s YouTube channel.

What Can NAEP Data Tell Us about Student Knowledge in Social Studies?

During this session, the panelists provided an overview of the NAEP social studies assessments, discussed the latest results released earlier this year, and presented research findings using the NAEP social studies data. The panelists also explored connections between NAEP social studies assessments and current social studies research and discussed the significance of NAEP for social studies education.

NAEP Studies SIG Newsletter:  The SIG issued a newsletter in the Spring of 2024.
