SIG Achievements in 2022-23

Minutes from every leadership meeting are saved in a shared folder accessible to the leadership team. This repository is helpful in generating the annual summary of activities and serves as a resource when there is a transition in SIG leadership.

In 2022-23, the SIG issued its first call for nominations for the newly established Outstanding Paper Award, formed a committee to review six nominations, and selected a winner announced at the annual NAEP Studies SIG Business Meeting held in Chicago, IL. The winning paper was “Relation between digital tool practices in the language arts classroom and reading comprehension scores by Ladislao Salmerón, Cristina Vargas, Pablo Delgado, and Naomi Baron. The paper appeared in Reading and Writing (2022) 36: 175-194. Dr. Salmerón accepted the award on behalf of his coauthors during the business meeting and provided attendees a summary of their work.

The SIG’s online presence has continued in 2022-23 through the work of Robert Perkins, the outgoing Webmaster. The SIG page on the AERA website has been regularly and quickly updated based on suggestions shared during leadership team meetings including advertising upcoming events hosted by the SIG and others. The Webmaster continues to maintain the SIG’s YouTube channel and the SIG’s Gmail account (AERANAEPStudiesSIG@gmail.com) as well as the SIG’s LinkedIn and Facebook pages.

Members of the SIG leadership team led the effort to organize two SIG-sponsored webinars, which were recorded and posted on the SIG’s YouTube channel.

Examining High School Coursetaking and Academic Performance: 2019 NAEP High School Transcript Study (HSTS), June 15, 2022

The NAEP HSTS is a special study where transcripts are collected and analyzed from a nationally representative sample of public and private high school graduates. The study examines the types of courses in which graduates were enrolled in high school, how many credits they earned, and the grades they received as well as the relationship between high school coursework and academic performance measured by grade 12 NAEP assessments. In this session, Robert Perkins and Lisa Hamilton of Westat reviewed results from the 2019 NAEP HSTS, looking at trends in high school coursetaking over the past three decades. In this webinar, they reviewed changes in the HSTS methodology since 2009, the ways that the HSTS data can be analyzed, the results from the 2019 study, and the resources available to educational researchers who may be interested in incorporating the HSTS data into their work.
