On July 9, Arthur (Skip) Lupia was selected to be the new assistant director for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) Directorate. He takes over for Fay Lomax Cook, who is stepping down on August 31.

“Skip Lupia’s leadership roles communicating science and encouraging research transparency make him an outstanding choice to advance social and behavioral research at NSF,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “Fay Cook has done a remarkable job leading SBE over the past four years. We look forward to working with Skip as he takes on this new role.”

Lupia is the Hal R. Varian Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan and research professor at its Institute for Social Research. He also serves as chair of the National Academy of Sciences Roundtable on the Application of the Social and Behavioral Sciences and chair of the Board of Directors for the Center for Open Science.

He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Rochester and master's and doctoral degrees in social science from the California Institute of Technology.

Lupia will begin at NSF on September 1.
