AERA Annual Meeting

2022 Call for Proposals

Systems Thinking in Education Special Interest Group

The 2022 American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting

April 22 - 25, 2022

San Diego, CA

The AERA 2022 Annual Meeting Call for Submissions is now available. The deadline is July 12, 2021. In addition, on behalf of AERA President Na’ilah Suad Nasir and 2022 Annual Meeting Program Co-Chairs Tryphenia Peele-Eady and Elizabeth Tipton, we are pleased to invite you to contribute ideas for the 2022 AERA Annual Meeting Presidential Program. The theme is "Cultivating Equitable Education Systems for the 21st Century."

The purpose of the Systems Thinking in Education SIG is to “focus on applications of systems thinking principles to address various issues in education” (Systems Thinking in Education website)

As you prepare your proposals for the 2022 annual meeting, we invite you to consider submitting your work to the Systems Thinking in Education SIG. Systems thinking is a cross-disciplinary concept that spans a diversity of issues, populations, and contexts, and, thus, fosters transdisciplinary conversations. In particular, we welcome proposals about systems thinking, educational systems, and/or systems change that highlight:

  1. Designing educational systems that ameliorate inequality in educational opportunity
  2. Disrupting systemic inequities
  3. Using systems thinking pedagogies in the classroom
  4. Designing and/or implementing PK-20 system reforms
  5. Creating sustainable systems
  6. Leading systems change in schools or districts
  7. Recognizing patterns and interconnections within and among schools

The Systems Thinking in Education SIG offers a welcoming venue for both established and emerging scholars from a diverse set of institutions and geographical regions. We give careful consideration to field, applied, and evaluation research, as well as theoretically oriented studies. We also welcome a broad range of methodologies.

Our program chairs invite graduate students and experienced researchers to submit papers, discussion roundtables, symposia, and posters that draw on transdisciplinary theories and constructs, integrated methods, and research approaches that aim to answer a breadth of questions from causal to interpretive/descriptive.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM, Pacific Time, on July 12, 2021.

If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact the 2022 Systems Thinking in Education SIG Program Chairs, Linda Mayger, The College of New Jersey (maygerl@tcnj.edu) and Lok-Sze Wong, University of North Texas (Lok-Sze.Wong@unt.edu).
