CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG Call for Nominations

The Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG requests nominations for the 2020 election. AERA policy requires that all elections be competitive; that is, there must be two or more candidates for each elected office. A candidate must be a paid member of the Latina/o/x Issues SIG. We seek nominations for the following positions:

Chair-Elect (1 year)
The Immediate Past-Chair shall assist and mentor the Chair and the Chair-Elect in providing leadership and directing the general affairs of the SIG, and shall serve on the Executive Committee. Eventually becoming Chair, this individual shall be responsible for the general administration of the SIG, for ensuring that the SIG Bylaws are followed, and shall act as liaison between the SIG and AERA and the SIG and the SIG Executive Committee. The Chair shall preside at all meetings of the SIG’s Executive Committee and at the Annual Business Meeting. The Chair shall act as parliamentarian or shall appoint a SIG member to serve in that role for each meeting. The Chair shall appoint ad hoc committees as needed. Unless otherwise specified in these Bylaws, the Chair of the SIG shall appoint persons to assist officers, to chair committees or to carry out other work of the SIG.

Program Chair (1 year)
The Program Chair shall be responsible for all activities, duties and obligations required to assemble and select reviewers, to monitor the proposal review process, to make final decisions regarding proposals and to create sessions for the Annual Meeting program of the SIG. The Program Chair shall serve on the Executive Committee. The Program Chair shall ensure that all proposals submitted for the SIG’s Annual Meeting program are reviewed by a minimum of two reviewers who are members of AERA.

Secretary/Treasurer (1 year)
The Secretary/Treasurer shall be responsible for managing and reporting on the financial accounts of the SIG and the safe keeping of all the financial documents of the SIG and shall serve on the Executive Committee.

Eligibility
Only Regular Members of AERA can run for office. Graduate students can only serve in positions designated for graduate students (i.e. Graduate Student Representative.) Candidates must also be current members of the SIG and of AERA to serve as an officer.

Nomination Process
Interested candidates must submit the following to Guillermo Ortega (guillermoortega@isu.edu). Nominations are due by October 27^th. Self-nominations are accepted.

Desired position
75- word statement that addresses why they are interested in the position and what skills and qualifications would make them a compelling candidate for the position for Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG.

Election Timeline
October: Nominations Due to Nominations Committee
January: Election opens early January
February: Election closes early February
Late-February 2020: AERA Central office will notify candidates and SIG Chairs of the election results. Election results will be announced in the February issue of Highlights.

Early Career Scholar Award

Description of the Award: This award is designed to honor the research contributions of beginning national and international scholars who conduct research related to Latina/o/x issues in education.

The rationale for Establishing the Award: The purpose of this award is to encourage and reward beginning scholars doing outstanding research in the area of Latina/o/x issues in education. The monetary part of the award will also assist them with the costs of attending the conference.

Eligibility Criteria: Nominations will be accepted on behalf of an individual in the early stages of their career, that is, no later than 10 years after receipt of their doctoral degree who has demonstrated a trajectory of publications and service with a potential that will enhance contribution in the area of Latina/o/x issues in education. Self-nominations for this award are not eligible.

Review/Selection Process and Timeline: Each submitted nomination will be assessed by the Award Committee based first on a review of the nominee’s curriculum vitae and scholarly publications using the selection criteria described in the next section. The three nominations with the highest review scores will then be examined and read by the Award Committee, reviewing the scores along with the reviewer comments and support letters, and will rank order the proposals (1 being the first choice, 2 is second choice, etc.). The committee chair(s) will tabulate the ranks from the committee members; the winner will be the nomination with the lowest total rank-order score.

Selection Criteria: The following criteria will be used to evaluate and select the recipient of the Early Career Scholar Award: Outstanding accomplishments in the area of Latina/o/x issues in education (e.g., quantity of scholarship that makes a significant contribution to the field of Latina/o/x issues in education, the quality and rigor of the scholarship, additional professional accomplishment/contributions to Latina/o/x issues in education), and the nominee being in the early stages of their career (no later than 10 years after receipt of doctoral degree).

Form of Recognition: Cash award, Plaque, and a one-year membership in the Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG Form of Announcement of Award Winner: The award winner will initially be announced via e-mail through the AERA SIG list-serv to the membership of the Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG. The winner will receive their award at the annual business meeting held at the annual AERA meeting.

Frequency of Conferral of the Award: Annually, provided members of the Award Committee agree that there is at least one high-quality nomination. If the committee determines that no high-quality nominations were received, no award will be conferred that year.

Persons submitting nominations will be requested to submit electronically (as doc, docx, or pdf files) the following for their nominee to be considered:

a letter of nomination from the person initiating the nomination explaining why the nominee is qualified to be recognized as having an exemplar early career record of research in the area of Latina/o/x issues in education;
nominee’s most recent curriculum vitae;
three representative scholarly publications by the nominee related to Latina/o/x issues in education; and,
two letters of support from individuals familiar with the nominee’s work and qualified to speak on their behalf in this area.

Elementary, Secondary, or Postsecondary
Education Research Award

Description of the Award: The Elementary, Secondary, or Postsecondary Education Research Award will recognize an individual that has made significant research contributions to Latina/o/x issues in Education. Research using any type of methodology or paradigms which represent research contributions in elementary, secondary, or postsecondary levels of education pertaining to Latina/o/x issues and concerns will be accepted and valued.

Criteria include the following: 1) a significant publication or set of publications that
has/have had outreach to researchers, educators, policy makers and others and which has made an important contribution in the area of Latina/o/x issues and education; 2) service in Latina/o/x communities, AERA, and/or other visible domains contributing to the improvement of Latina/o/x education, and; 3) active membership in AERA and the Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG.

Nominations: Nominations’ will be accepted from any member of AERA or nonmembers. The award will be given on the basis of contributions in scholarship, professional standing, and community outreach dealing with “Latina/o/x issues” and not on the basis of seniority or whether or not a nominee is Latina/o/x.

Nominations’ should include a current CV and a statement (no more than 500 words) that discusses why the individual nominated should receive the award. The statement should include reference to publication(s) written by the nominee and a statement about their significance for Latina/o/x education. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Review/Selection Process and Timeline: Each submitted nomination will be assessed and ranked by the Award Committee based first on a review of the nominee’s CV and statement. The committee chair will tabulate the ranks from the committee members; the winner will be the nominee with the best overall rankings.

Announcement of Award Winner: The award winner will initially be announced via email through the AERA SIG list-serve to the membership of the Latina/o/x Research
Issues SIG. The winner will receive their award at the annual business meeting held at the annual AERA meeting. The award recipient will receive a plaque, $200.00, and a one-year membership in the Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG. The award winner must be present to win.

OUTSTANDING DISSERTATION AWARD

Description of the Award: This award honors a Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG member who has completed a dissertation that makes a significant contribution to research related to Latina/o/x issues in education. The purpose of this award is to encourage and reward a SIG member who has completed an outstanding dissertation in this area.

Eligibility Criteria: Nominations will be accepted on behalf of an individual who makes a significant contribution in the area of Latina/o/x issues in education and who has completed a dissertation and been conferred a doctoral degree within the 2-year period preceding receipt of the award (e.g., if dissertation was defended in April, 2021, then member would be eligible to be nominated for this award).

Review/Selection Process and Timeline: Each submitted nomination will first be assessed and scored by the Award Committee.

Selection Criteria: Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG Membership is not required to be nominated for the dissertation award, but is required to receive the award. Please note, although an individual may be eligible for consideration of multiple dissertation awards across AERA divisions/SIGs, the nominee chosen for the Latina/x/o Outstanding Dissertation Award may not accept multiple AERA division/SIG dissertation awards. In the event the dissertation author declines the Latina/o/x Outstanding Dissertation Award, the committee will contact the author of the dissertation rank-ordered as 2^nd to receive the award.

Form of Recognition: Cash award, plaque, and a one-year complimentary membership in the Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG will be awarded to the dissertation selected to receive the Latina/o/x Outstanding Dissertation Award. The award winner will initially be announced via e-mail through the AERA SIG list-serv to the membership of the Latina/o/x Research Issues SIG. The winner will receive their award, INCLUDING THE CASH AWARD, at the business meeting held at the AERA annual meeting. The winner does not have to be present, but a designated person must be present to receive the award and money.

Frequency of Conferral of the Award: Annually, provided members of the Award Committee agree that there are at least two high-quality nominations. If the committee determines that no high-quality nominations were received, no award will be conferred that year.

All nominations should include: dissertation author’s name, institutional affiliation, telephone, email, and name of dissertation chair(s). Submissions may include self-nominations.
Nominees will then be requested to submit electronically (as Word files) the following for consideration of the award:
- Title Page (author’s name, address, institutional affiliation, telephone, email, name of dissertation committee chair(s), and members);
- Letter of Recommendation from Dissertation Committee Chair;
- Blind Dissertation Summary (not to exceed 10 pages without references that includes: statement of the problem, theoretical framework, methodology, results, discussion, conclusions, significance for field of Latina/o/x in education; double spaced, 12-point font, APA format); and reference page (only those cited in blind dissertation summary).
