Elizabeth G. Cohen Distinguished Career in Applied Sociology of Education Award

Every two years, the Sociology of Education SIG selects a senior scholar to receive this award, in recognition of a research career that is an exemplar of how to successfully bring rigorous research to bear on solutions to problems in practical settings. This award recognizes our exceptional colleagues who go above and beyond the call of academic duty, making their work accessible, relevant and effective for application to our most pressing educational problems. Past award winners include: James Rosenbaum; Roslyn Arlin Mickelson; Russell Rumberger; Barbara Schneider; Joyce L. Epstein; and Hugh “Bud” Mehan. To nominate a colleague, please send along the nominee’s CV and a 1-2 page letter explaining why she/he is a good candidate for this award. Send all nominations by January 15, 2021 to: Aaron Pallas at

The Maureen Hallinan Graduate Student Paper Award

The award carries with it a $500 cash award in addition to a lovely plaque; the cash award is courtesy of the Department of Sociology and the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity at the University of Notre Dame. The awards will be presented at our business meeting at AERA. Nominations are due  January 15, 2021. Please send all nominations to: Brian An at

Sociology of Education SIG-Sponsored Meeting Registration Award (in lieu of Travel Awards for Graduate Students)

I am pleased to invite applications for the Sociology of Education SIG-Sponsored Meeting Registration, covering the cost of registration for the AERA Virtual Annual Meeting this April. The meeting registration award is meant to recognize young scholars who do high-quality work in Sociology of Education. In order to apply for this award, students must be presenting a sole or co-authored paper in one of the SOE SIG sessions (paper or roundtable), and they must not have other means to support all of their registration expenses for AERA. Interested students should submit an abstract of the paper they will present at AERA and any other sources of funding they have to help offset the cost of registration. Please submit applications to Anna Katyn Chmielewski ( by February 1, 2021.
