Abstract: With videoconferencing as a means to replicate face-to-face interactions, there has been a growing interest to measure Zoom fatigue in the educational context. In a sample of undergraduate and graduate students (Ntotal=61), we examined students’ Zoom fatigue, cognitive load, boredom, and personality characteristics in synchronous online courses during Spring 2023. First, we found that camera use and nonverbal mechanisms as well as neuroticism and Zoom fatigue demonstrated statistically significant positive associations. Second, camera use was lowest in quantitative courses compared to non-quantitative courses. Third, mental effort and instructor enthusiasm were shown to be significant negative predictors of boredom while quantitative courses and hybrid courses were significant positive predictors of boredom.
