| Abstract: |
Disability studies offers multiple frameworks that inform understandings of disability. However, existing frameworks often do not attend to the process by which disabled people navigate these multiple understandings. The purpose of this study was to understand the essence of disability through the experiences of disabled people who are doing institutional disability work. A secondary goal was to twist phenomenology so that it fits disabled bodyminds, rather than twisting disabled bodyminds to fit phenomenology. Methodologically we spun together ideas from interpretive phenomenology, queer phenomenology, and phenomenological examinations of illness. We found that participants held complex understandings of disability and that participants experienced dissonance between their personal and professional lives.
