| Abstract: |
The quality and attrition of beginning teachers is a serious problem in education systems. The research literature shows that induction programs have a positive effect on teachers’ performance and retention. The induction programs, however, don't always meet their goals. Drawing on organizational routine theory, the present study focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the induction process. This is a case study of a good, big high school in Israel. The data was collected by means of interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the induction process is a bundle of routines that gain satisfaction and recognition, which mainly promote socialization to the school, and only rarely contribute to the beginning teachers’ professional development.
