Abstract: This qualitative, critical case study examined the community response within a large, diverse public school system following introduction of an equity-focused, comprehensive redistricting of school attendance areas. Using a Critical Race Theory lens, I applied Qualitative Content Analysis to over 2,500 public testimonies filed during a six-week period in 2019. I sought to understand who within the community publicly voiced their views and what they said. I particularly focused on their statements related to race, opportunity, and merit. Findings indicated that normalization of racial segregation in people’s lives elicited strong opposition marked by colorblind racism. Results also highlight untapped potential in both the counter and “silent” narratives for disrupting the juggernaut of white privilege in American education.
