This study examined the relationship between home play and learning practice among low-income families using the Family Map Inventory database, a comprehensive research-based screening tool for home visiting and center-based programs. Using data from 896 child-caregiver dyads, regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between play and learning practice at home. The findings revealed play related scales (availability of materials, home play, variety play) significantly predicted home reading practice and home teaching practice with variety play as the strongest predictor. A similar pattern was found among families with mental health concerns. Caregivers who provided their children more play opportunities in and outside of home read books more frequently with the child and taught more basic academic skills at home.
