| Abstract: |
This paper explores the use of life history in the form of a cultural autobiography (CA) as an instructional tool for preservice teachers at a midwestern regional public university enrolled in a mandatory multicultural education course. The authors problematize the use of CA through an examination of preservice teacher submissions which suggest that while life history has potential to promote critical reflections on one’s position in a complex interplay of power relations, it can also reify pre-existing prejudicial attitudes. Composite quotes from 85 undergraduate submissions are used to support a reconceptualization of the CA assignment though the incorporation of digital tools to making it more meaningful and authentic in its exploration of concepts, self, and education.
