While a great deal of research has focused on the impact of algebra course-taking on student achievement and academic outcomes like college enrollment, much less research has focused on the acquisition and growth of algebra skills in relation to student achievement and outcomes. This is surprising given that not all algebra courses are created equally. In this paper, we explore the specific algebra skills associated with NAEP mathematics achievement scores, college enrollment, and college selectivity. We find that higher order algebra skills are associated with better outcomes. Eleventh graders who mastered, at minimum, algebraic equivalents were considered college prepared by NAGB standards, were significantly more likely to go to college and to go to a more selective college.
