Abstract: The importance of the development of early numeracy has been established in prior studies, and the pedagogical approach focusing on number values rather than counting has been emphasized. Dragonbox School builds on this pedagogical approach for teaching mathematics in primary school and includes physical and digital components orchestrated into a blended learning approach. The main aim of this study was to measure the impact of the newly developed blended learning system Dragonbox School for early numeracy competence development in grade 1 and 2 through a quasi-experimental pre-post study across one school-year. Our data (N= 627 grade 1 and N= 780 grade 2 students) showed significant positive results on achievement and motivation in favor of the intervention group in grade 1.
