Abstract: What curriculum materials or resources do secondary mathematics teachers reference while lesson planning? This paper describes a study of 11 secondary mathematics teachers’ lesson planning process and how they utilized the available curriculum resources as they participated in a lesson planning interview (Grossman, 1990). The focus of the study was to identify the ways in which emergent bilingual students were supported in their engagement in mathematical practices, both by the curricular materials and by their teachers’ use and modification of these materials. In this paper, I discuss the ways in which the teachers used the available resources and the implications it may have for curriculum design.
