| Abstract: |
We aim to examine how the conceptualization and measurement of “STEM” as one field of study, rather than distinct disciplines “S.T.E.M”, influences our understanding of academic inequities in these fields. We examine this question specifically in the context of a dual-enrollment program in the Southwest. Using student surveys, institutional data and course performance metrics, we assess the impact of students’ performance in STEM dual-enrollment courses on their STEM-major aspirations. Analyses are first conducted in the aggregate, and then repeated per major. Our findings highlight relationships between course performance and major aspirations that are moderated by student demographics and specific to major. The implications for future research are discussed.
