Abstract: Despite growing demand for students capable of working with data in science, high school students often struggle to attain proficient data literacy skills. Studies have found that bringing bioinformatics into schools can significantly strengthen these skills. However, research suggests that bioinformatics’ reliance on technology and analytic tools can pose instructional challenges. We used a Resource Activation (Rivera Maulucci, 2010) framework to examine these challenges for a 9th-grade biology teacher. We analyzed classroom observation notes, a post-implementation interview, and daily reflections. We found that access to bioinformatics resources often did not lead to resource activation. Our findings suggest that effective utilization of bioinformatics resources is dependent on teachers appreciating the value of interacting with multiple technological and analytical resources simultaneously.
