| Abstract: |
To help physical education teachers to perform successfully under a learning-oriented teacher accountability system, we need to understand work environmental factors that influence their performance and engagement. Directed by Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, the study provides a qualitative account on teachers’ job demands and resources under a state-wide teacher accountability system. A sample of teachers (n=51) received semi-structured interviews. Inductive analysis revealed that physical education teachers were subjected to shrinking instruction time and irrelevant responsibilities beyond teaching and coaching. They were lacking essential job resources to promote and effectively assess student learning to meet the expectation of the teacher accountability system. It is crucial to provide teacher quality curricular and instructional supports to make physical education learning oriented.
