| Abstract: |
This study considers how Threshold Concepts can facilitate design skill development and supporting curricular interventions. To enable pedagogic change in design education, educators need more than just information about the final destination. They need an evidence-based model for developing curriculum and assessing student variables. This study provides the basis for future empirical work that could validate early Threshold Concept findings by situating preliminary findings in a broader literature base. Further, the study encourages dialog around how post-secondary design programs can help the student navigate often overwhelming feelings of being stuck during the early design process and encourage them to reevaluate long-held assumptions about how designers learn and what models best serve cognitive design skill development.
